This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Contemplating Publishing - Any Advice?

After some considerable thought, I feel like I might be able to publish (some small articles at least) for Precis Intermedia Games Swords and Six-Siders mainly because our tabletop gaming is going so well with all the expansions that I added to the base rules to make it feel more Sword and Sorcery, and we're using quite a few houserules that I thought other people might enjoy.

I am thinking of creating a hundred kingdoms/territories/domains with heavy Sword & Sorcery theme to them, introducing new rules, hooks, and a small adventure or two in each one. It seems like a daunting task, but one that might be considerably enjoyable.

I'm just going to put this out as an open question and see who bites... Does anyone have any advice (legal, editing, or otherwise) that I might benefit from at this time?

If this should be under a different forum, feel free to move it. :)

My advice is to make a habit of writing. Write write write and then re-write.  Practice leads to habit forming and gain in skill/ability.  Also you might not ever 100% feel something is done, but it probably might be good enough to publish and then update or replace later on with more work.

For example, if you were self-publishing on DriveThruRPG, you can make something go live/for sale,   if you really want to make changes you can update your product, and then update the title with the new changes, you can even change the price as you go along to adjust what you think the product is worth based on your changes.

For example you might think something is only worth $0.50 at its current level of polish or quality, but if you update it you can update the price if you feel it might be worth $1.00.

And of course the age-old advice of, if you want to do something, just do it, applies. There is almost never a "perfect" time to start doing things, so just start doing it and you'll figure it out as you go. Tame your fear.

The hardest part is getting it finished. A hundred kingdoms sounds like a lot. Why not start with a small region and go from there?

Second hardest bit is getting attention and feedback. Alas, I haven't found many ways to solve that other than persistence, maybe advertise on reddit, FB, etc. Once you get a few readers, they are likely to buy more stuff from you if your stuff is good.

Maybe start a blog? One or two kingdoms a week, try to get some feedback, and after a year you can compile, publish, and advertise in your blog.

In my experience, these things are not easy and it is not profitable, but can be fulfilling!
