This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: RPGPunditThere's a reason for that. They're shown to be what works best for a game manual.

RPGPundit

Just because it's been used the last 300 years doesn't mean it has shown to work the best, it just means that people are familiar with it. Why change something that has become so common place, almost part of the ID of D&D. ;)

If you stack your books flat, it'll always be on top, or on a bookshelf it'll draw the eye due to a gap in a uniform line of books. Simple.

yeah, prety minor but I was trying to finda a fault in it. It seems people just say "I don't like the shape" without any real reason why.

Quote from: McrowI don't think it's quite that small.

it's a 9x9 square.

Howzabout the special starter sets that came with the extra figures?  I'm thinking of the one that came with ObiWan and General Grievous that I almost bought on sale last year.

Not sure, don't have that one and don't remember seeing it either.

It's about a 1/2 in more wide than standerd book and 2 inched shorter, not sure how big that starter box was.

I have it, but it's at home. I think it's 9x9.

Yeah, should stack next to the RPG nicely....

Makes you wonder if at some point they plan to have "SW boxed set" with minis maps and core book in it?

KrakaJak

Well..the Saga Book itself has a mimi map in it already :)

Which is extra cool...cause I didn't have one!

I don't know if this has anything to do with it but did they choose the size to differentiate it from the other D20 Star Wars products?

The shape thing...

DOES make it noticeable on our shelves , thats for sure.

We still have a copy of that minis starter box . Tempted to size those two against each other tonight.

I do not care for this book shape. I find books like this awkward to hold. i'm comfortable with a4 but games aren't made that way (except Qin) because that's not the format used in the states. However i prefer a book to be taller than wider because it distributes weight properly as i hold it. Game books are already awkward enough to read (ah, the creak of the spine).

Caesar Slaad

Quote from: McrowSo what part bugs you about the skill system? IIRC, you play D&D, right? It works pretty much the same, except you automatically get a "skill rank" in all skills every-other level, instead of buying them.

That would be why I don't like it.

They made this decision based on the assumption that most people max out their ranks.

I'm not one of those people. I like crafting my characters.

Now I do do the simplification for NPCs, but I resent being forced into that for PCs.
The Secret Volcano Base: my intermittently updated RPG blog.

Running: Pathfinder Scarred Lands, Mutants & Masterminds, Masks, Starfinder, Bulldogs!
Playing: Sigh. Nothing.
Planning: Some Cyberpunk thing, system TBD.

Meh. The way I see it, it works out pretty much the same either way. The only issue I have is that it appears you can take skill focus at first level which would create super-experts at first level (+10, +ability). I've been toying with the idea of imposing a minimum level to skill focus.

Apparently, the "three well-armed young people from all walks of life, walking out of a collage" cover scheme is very effective, as well, but I'm delighted SW didn't go that way. It's cliche and unnecessary to sell books.

The SW book fits nicely into the minis starter box. Not so perfectly that it seems obviously planned, though. The box art and design are more cartoony. They don't necesarily look related sitting next to each other on the shelf.

I don't have a huge problem with it, actually - after all, the characters folks will want to play are going to be hyper-competent fairly early on anyway. Not many folks want to work their way up the ranks.

That's what destroyed Star Wars Galaxies, actually... *sigh*
