This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

"The Orville" which RPG system?? Would you use?

Quote from: RPGPundit;1004693It is interesting how they decided not to have transporters.

They didn't need them.  Star Trek only had transporters because the production initially couldn't afford to build a shuttle set and do landing visual effects after all.

I don't know if this has been said or not but D20 future ( a older system ) looks to be flexable enough to do pretty good. In fact now that I think about it, I am going to try the D20 future books and run a level one game.

Actually, I'm gonna change my answer to the only right answer: Star Trek The Roleplaying Game by FASA.  I think it's something the producers of Orville and Galaxy Quest understand better than any Star Trek producer since the original series.

Ha, post #13 is vindicated...but really why reinvent the wheel? FASA Trek works fine if you understand the rules.

Fate Accellerated. Without a doubt in my mind.

My first read through of Fate convinced me it could do TOS style Star Trek like nothing else I had ever seen before.

Quote from: CRKrueger;1002608With the F-bomb, it's pretty clear - Discovery is trying really, REALLY hard to be the Anti-Trek, and CBS is trying oh so hard to be edgy.

It's completely bizarre...
Orville is a Star Trek show using a different setting.
Discovery is deliberately and quite loudly NOT a Star Trek show using the Star Trek setting.

OFF TOPIC:  The reason is the actually the fact that Star Trek is owned by two companies.  Paramount and CBS.  They used to be owned together, but broke up a few years ago.  Paramount owns the rights to making new series in the 'canon' universe, using the imagery of both technology and aliens.  CBS has the rights to redistribute and sell the older series and movies (Up to an including Voyager and Enterprise and the Abrams' series.)

CBS has just enough rights to use the names, but not the look, technology or even the timeline, no matter what they claim.

/OFF TOPIC

I think any game system will work fine, the Orville is a character drama, as a series it tends not to care about the technology or science beyond the basic set dressing or reasons of plot.

The reason to re-invent the wheel is because FASA Trek has been out of print for over twenty-five years.

I'd probably use some kind of star-trek system. But probably not FASA.

Star Trek Adventures would be a pretty good system for it. Any game that was character-centric would work.

Fate Core - especially the Atomic Robo flavor - would also do well.
