This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: Koltar;1002474If you were going to adapt as a role playing game setting for friends - would you use GURPS, Savage Worlds, or the TRAVELLER system?

I'd use Savage Worlds, mainly because it's become my go-to generic system. And with the Science Fiction Companion, all the hard work's already been done for me. Now I just need to go through the Star Trek Encyclopedia and Chronology of the Future to swipe plots and characters.

This is a great recommendation

Its possible that too many of you are focusing on the commercials and promos for the show and not the actual show itself.

The episodes themselves have been pretty normal straight up science fiction with bits of comedy - the characters act like real people - like an average roleplaying group of players.

This video is a condensed version of the highlights from the first Six Episodes. if you don't ,ind the * SPOILERS * it is a good recap of what the show has been like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=528oXc04ICY

The show is essentially Star Trek: The New Generation plus a little potty humor. Just use whatever you would use for Star Trek and the players will add the potty humor.

Subscribed since episode 1. Still stand by recommending Starships and Spacemen.

Maybe - but the show has no matter teleporters, no equivalent to 'transporters' at all.
Whenever they interact with a planet its over video screen or they have to use their shuttles.

Each episode has gotten a bit more serious than the previous one.
GURPS version of 'Prime Directive' would make sense - because these characters definitely have quirks and disadvantages.

Unlike Star Trek Next Gen - these characters act like regular people - not utopian ideal caricatures.

Then it doesn't matter just pick the system of the desired complexity and run the campaign. The Orville specifics are l going to be handled with notes and advice anyway.

So what?  Prime Directive has transporters, just don't use them. Transporters are a setting detail not a rule.

It is interesting how they decided not to have transporters.

Made the last episode, Majority Rules, a challenge for the crew to deal with. They couldn't just beam out of there.

Maybe - but that also makes for better storytelling.

Also, better for an RPG situation - they don't have a magic-Tech device to pull their asses out of danger. They have to think or fight their way out of trouble and make it back to wherever they parked their shuttle vehicle. Lots of opportunity for role playing.

Of course it does. That's why so many Star Trek episodes have transporter malfunctions or interference preventing their usage.

I seem to recall they got transporters because it was cheaper to do that than to build and shoot ship's boats/shuttlecraft scenes all the time.

And now someone had made the right conclusion that not having them in the first place would save lots of plot device time;).
