This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: Benoist;547073I don't have the quote handy, but the thinking behind organizing OSRIC spells alphabetically was and is that its not conceived to replace, but supplement AD&D's use at the game table, so you can have both available to you as you play.
That sounds reasonable, except for the named spells are now scattered all over the list, like the various Bigby's Hand or Mordenkainen spells.  A rather small annoyance, I suppose, for having what amounts to a spell index.

I see what you mean. At the same time, those names are obviously WotC owned IP (LE SIGH), and coming up with placeholder's would have been lame, let's be honest.

Butcher, nice list.  Good job, and good descriptions.

Cool list, thanks! There were a couple on their I hadn't heard of. Been meaning to download and try out Stars Without Number for a while now.

OP looks great.  One caveat:  I really feel some mention should be made of HackMaster.  While it's debatable whether it's a part of the "OSR proper", its publication was an early sign of things to come (2001!), and it's certainly notable in that it uses the AD&D engine after WotC officially "killed it".  What's more, it definitely helped to spark interest in the old ways at a time when that wasn't fashionable, yet.  Just my two cents.

Absolutely.  Mordenkainen could have been replaced with "Mystic" to keep those spells in the same(ish) area, but I am not coming up with anything off the top of my head for Bigby.  Bewitching?  Not a whole lot out there without really making it sound stilted.

In any case, if a word starting with a different letter were used, it would sound terrible and rather defeat the purpose of alphabetizing.

I dunno. I always found HackMaster to be more like a 3e spin-off with faux old-school furniture.

No true old school D&D-game would be point build, now, would it?

Hackmaster was doing the "Second Wave" of the OSR before the "First Wave" started. ;)

Hackmaster4e was AD&D+.  True, it had an actual skill system (as opposed to proficiency slots) like 3e, but the idea of Talents, Quirks, Flaws, and Skills was all a part of Hackmaster way before 3e (as evidenced in KoDT.)

LOL @ "AD&D+". :D You don't do "AD&D+". AD&D is already Advanced. :D

Yeah, in a kind of "here's what a caricature of AD&D would look like for you retards" kind of way, I know.

That's not what I call "Advanced". :D
