The new OSR Logo to Replace The One Now Legally Questionable

He seems to have deleted the G+ thread in the OSR community where I pointed out he doesn't have any author's rights over the TSR logo, the letters OSR, or derivative works of the TSR logo that spell OSR. His own work is derivative of the TSR logo. He only has rights over his own original work, ie what he added himself.

I posted:

The issue is that your work is a derivative work of the TSR logo, and possibly derivative of earlier OSR logos that used the same idea. You do not have any rights over other derivative works based on the TSR logo even though they may resemble your work.

Then the thread vanished.

@Omega: that's pretty. I'd love to see more icons of mountains,settlements/ruins/whatever. :)

I love the map icons, too! However this feels a touch busy, and I cannot place my finger on what specifically to remove. Let's use Coco Chanel's wisdom and "remove two accessories [Map Icons] before stepping out the door" and see how it feels.

Perhaps any random two besides the O and R stairs? I sort of love the trap icon inside the O, as the boxed [T] gives homage to TSR, so keep that one too? After that, random table it and let's see how it feels afterwards. :)

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

I sorta like it. :) But you know what's really needed? An OSR variant logo to represent often forgotten-in-the-pantheon old skool games, like Classic Traveller, Hero, GURPS, etc. (Dunno about where to place old Runequest as it's been rebooted...)

Maybe an OSR in underlined, italic, red font?

Here's one using as close to a Traveller font and color as I could find:

Ooh, pretty! :) What do you think about the O being bigger than the S & R, so as to emulate Traveller more?

OK. :) So what look besides the big white block RIFTS font would you use to evoke Palladium?

He has now denied any previous implication that he owns the "OSR" acronym. He's also butthurt that they called him antifa and  a regressive leftist, but he was more than happy to put other people in a bad light when they decided not to use his logo. If the damn logo hasn't turned into a purity test, it's not for lack of trying by him and others.

...So the OSR is now "synonymous with hate and harassment" because James Raggi likes Jordan Peterson? Am I missing something or is this all there is to it? What else happened?

It's a combination of that and Venger triggering them with a couple of blog posts.

They didn't think through that there was no leverage here absent accepted ownership of the term "OSR", if only because the OSR is filled with logo creators who would jump at the chance to replace his logo and advance their own names at his expense.

A contributed logo for something the creator doesn't own is 100% fungible; not their own logo, per se, but its value to 3rd parties.  Unless people believe that you own the background property, any person of mediocre talent can make up a functional replacement.  All you're trying to do is tie the letters "O" "S" and "R" to playing D&D in a certain style; there's a million roads to that type of Rome.

EDIT - I do think withdrawing it from all use is the right thing to do here.  I should clarify that I applaud him for that.  It saves him and everyone else from making individual product determinations on an ongoing basis, while being true to their own compass.
