This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

WTF: WTF?

Is it me, or does Pundit need a new catch phrase for his "this game is junk" series?

Sosthenes

It's you.

If it would've been, we would have a "Nobilis: WTF" thread, and not something as modest as Tekumel.

James McMurray

I had no idea or inclination to find out what Tekumel was so I never read that thread. I just popped in and it turns out that WTF wasn't just a tired phrase he couldn't think of an alternative for, it was intended as a witty subtitle for a stream of posts railing against things he thinks he's better than. It's no more entertaining because of that knowledge, but at least I understand the reasoning now.

Carry on people, nothing to see here. :)

Sosthenes

Can we talk about Werewolf the Forsaken now? I don't get the connection between lycanthropes and the spirit world. Granted, it's better than the eco-punk first edition...

James McMurray

Sure we can talk about it. I haven't read the new edition of Werewolf, so I might not be very useful. :)

I think, and this is totally just me meandering through random trains of thought, but I think that the werewolves were originally made into spiritual naturists because the vampires were the opposite and WoD was looking for a dichotomy.

Vampires: Law (Camarilla) vs. Chaos (Sabbat)

Mage: Technology (technocracy) vs. Supernatual (mages)

Werewolf: Nature (Werewolves) vs. Perversion (The Wyrm)

The games have a lot more in them than just that, but those seem to me to be good first cuts at laying out their themes.

I do agree that I'm not sure where spiritualism came into the werewolf culture in the game, but it doesn't bug me. It seems to make for a fun game, which is all that really matters.

Ever heard of Old Thies? During a famous Latvian court case back in the 17th century, the man was charged with being a werewolf; and in a rather surprising plea for innocence he argued that while the accusation was indeed true, werewolves were good and literally on the side of the angels, being "Hounds of God" who hunted down witches and devils and occasionally attacked Hell itself. That might explain the link.

THere's actually a lot of legends of shamanistic shapeshifters in Native American mythology, something Werewolf has always borrowed from since first edition.

There was even an X-Files episode about a Native American werewolf shaman, "Wendigo" IIRC.

That would've been okay by me if they had put that into "Clanbook Coyote" or something like that. But they almost completely steered away from the European stereotypes. Well, as I've said, as long as they don't do it for the New Age mother goddess...

RPGPundit

You really misunderstood that series of threads.  None of the settings mentioned are on my serious "hate list", otherwise as someone had mentioned you'd have seen threads on ww games, Nobilis, Forge games, etc instead.

What you saw was a series of threads about known settings that have a reputation (well-earned or not) for being "very wierd". The point of the threads was to try to figure out just how wierd they were, and see if there were people who could make those settings comprehensible to those of us who were baffled by them.

LKike I said, I didn't even read the first one. My comment wasn't about the threads themselves but rather what I thought was a repetitive and unoriginal title for them. It just seemed to me that given how many words you output on a daily basis you'd be able to find a few new ones every now and then. Like I said, I didn't realize it was meant as a trend.

Perhaps one day if I get bored enough I'll actually read the threads, but as it stands they're about game worlds I don't care about so I doubt it. However, while I find most of your writing to be self-serving drivel, you can sometimes start some interesting threads of conversation, so if I do find myself interested in one of the worlds I'll check out the thread to see what you stirred up. As it stands though there are already more games I want to run on my plate then my time can handle, so I doubt it.

RPGPundit

Yea, well now I guess you realized that they were meant to be a series.

Anyways, I doubt very much I'll ever run any of them (except Hollow World), but the threads are really worth looking at in and of themselves.

I said twice that I realize they're a series. Why are you guessing? ;)
