Title: The Mostly-Peaceful Fires of Planescape 5e
Post by: RPGPundit on October 04, 2023, 04:00:42 PM
The first previews of the #dnd5e #Planescape are out, and predictably, it doesn't look good.

Well at least they've provided us with enemies to destroy!

I can't wait to mow these guys down with my combat wheelchair.

5e had a lovely 6 or so years.  :) And then WotC pulled a 3.5 on 5e, just like they "Essentials"-ed 4e, because they couldn't help themselves. Oh well, at least the past still exists to flagrantly throw their failures back in their face.

:D La la la, off to fun gaming away from today gaming! /skips away

I'm mystified as to why these guys would be considered any kind of protagonist or ally. Look at them! They look like cultists for crying out loud.

Yeah, yeah, I know, wokeism.

Yes, the Planescape setting is incompatible with wokeness.  Woke people cannot admit to evil existing because it is defined as what they basically are.  Thus it doesn't exist

Is it just me or the right arm seems weird?

Hey I thought white people weren't allowed to have dreadlocks!

Now that GeekyBugle mentions it, that arm does look wrong. Like its. It actually connected to the shoulder or something.

Hands of Havock?  More like "Hands of A.I. Art".

I think it's the shoulder guards, they're making the arm placement look weird.

That being said, I'm wondering where this gimp's arm/shoulder attachment points are. 40k Space Marines don't look like this.

Now speaking from a lore/thematic standpoint... these guys should barely survive in Sigil. The Lady of Pain has been pretty clear that large-scale disruptions aren't permitted (see the aftermath of the Faction War in which she shut down EVERYONE because she was tired of their shit).

Of course, with our luck, the New and Improved Planescape (lol) will have them replace the dabus.

It's all so tiresome.

If I understand what they were saying about planescape's role in the promotion video, it makes very little sense to do this. I think they are chasing marvel, multiverse or something. Planescape is fine, it has a dedicated fanbase who love it but making it the backbone of D&D is like making Ravenloft or Dark Sun the backbone (arguably two setting even more popular but still incredibly niche when compared to more standard settings like Forgotten Realms). Some people loved Planescape, most people never interfaced with it at all (it was maybe good to have in case you needed that kind of information should the players go to some strange plane of existence, but it wasn't something you wanted featured in every campaign). Obviously this will depend on how far they take things, but from the sound of it, it will almost be like every campaign world is Doctor Who, whether you like it or not (and I like Doctor Who fine, but I don't necessarily want the whole multiverse of D&D intruding into every campaign setting). I love Ravenloft too, but I also understand how it irritated people when someone like Soth got plunked there, or Vecna (I liked Soth in Ravenloft, didn't get why they put Vecna there, but I can see this creating that cross-campaign irritation on a much larger scale).

:) Brendan, the obvious logical response is we must now make Jakandor, Hollow Earth, or Pellinore as the next default D&D setting!  :D We must talk these up as Edenic Ur-Settings, unbespoilt by unworthy GM sticky fingers. If we talk these settings up and "gatekeep them" for their  "innocence" it'll be irresistable forbidden fruit!  ;D

This misses the bigger news that WotC has opted to no longer distribute through Penguin Random House (which its done since the beginning); the number one reason its appeared so readily on bookstore shelves for people to happen across.

Likely more proof of their intent to have a walled garden where the only access to material will be via their VTT.

Yeah. I think its just the glove's odd sticky out bits.

But I look at it and stuff like that makes me wonder if it is AI art?

I mean, you could be right but I think the right arm joins the torse at the armpit not the shoulder.

Again, it could well be the "armor", but I've seen drawings with armor that don't give that impression.

I also think it might be AI + artist.

Although it's true that WotC has made it corporate policy not to give a twopenny fuck about print books anymore, I don't think "opted" is the right word. When bookstore distribution only gets you 11000 sales on a much-promoted D&D book (Radiant Citadel), I strongly suspect it was Penguin who pulled the plug.
