This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The Minis Poll

About a hundred prepainted figures (mostly D&D and some Pathfinder minis), bought them cheap most of the time.

Used them three or four times last year. I usually don't use minis when I GM but sometimes I use them with a flipmat to highlight a particular encounter.

RPGPundit

I'm glad that I never got into minis.

Quote from: RPGPundit;870786How many rpg miniature do you own? (note: not counting minis that are for board or war games)

I no longer play wargames and haven't since I was about 15.

Consequently all the miniature figurines I own are for use in RPGs. (I wouldn't count Shogun figures because they're not the right size to mix with the figures I use for RPGs.)

Many of them were originally for wargaming or for mixed wargaming/RPG purposes.

Some of them I've bought more recently for RPG purposes only, though none in the last couple of years.

I reckon I've probably got 150 or something like that, maybe 200, quite a few but not really enough.

Probably two thirds of them are painted, maybe mostly by me but some of them because I bought them 2nd hand. I haven't really painted many if any miniatures since I gave up wargaming.

Quote from: RPGPundit;870786How many miniatures have you used in the last 3 months in an RPG?

Unfortunately after a nice 22-session campaign I reffed in 2014-2015 and another 6 or so sessions in 2015 apart from that, my tabletop gaming is currently on hiatus while I write up the many, many rulebook edits I planned while reffing that long campaign and subsequently.

I'm expecting to possibly get two games in in the coming week, but I'm not expecting miniature figures to feature in either of them.

But out of say 15 games I probably GM'd in 2015, I would guess that I probably used miniature figurines in about half of them, maybe a bit more.
I did not write this but would like to mention it:-

I did however write this Player\'s Quickstarter for the forthcoming Soul\'s Calling RPG, free to download here, and a bunch of other Soul\'s Calling stuff available via Lulu.

As for this, I can\'t comment one way or the other on the correctness of the factual assertions made, but it makes for chilling reading:-

If you just pic one or two up because you like the design but may not actually use. Then it can be fun and shows appreciation for the REALLY HARD WORK the sculptors put into these.

Out of all the minis I have. About a dozen though are ones that I keep around just to look at.

Then theres the people who get minis to paint. I cant paint minis at all. But I know quite a few who get the minis not to game with. But to paint. And some are just jaw droppingly good at it too.

Thousands if you count all my minis as I will use any of them for any game. None counting minis used only for rpgs, for the same reason.

In the last three months, I haven't used any for an rpg. Haven't needed them recently.
There are three kinds of people in the world: those that can do math and those that can\'t.

camazotz

A couple hundred, give or take, but I haven't used any of them in close to 15 months now. I think I've finally broken the long nightmare that began in 2003 (when I got into my first group that insisted on minis for gaming) and didn't end until late 2014 (thanks to 5E and 13th Age making gaming without minis a "thing" again).

Well shit, that's just stunningly good.

It's a great showpiece!  But I find that it has limited usage, and for me, that fails my personal criteria for minis.

Yeah, that too.

But what's the scale on that?  My collection's 25 mm, but with the detail on that, that piece is not merely diorama size, but likely bigger than that.

(Woo, my 1776th post!)
This was a cool site, until it became an echo chamber for whiners screeching about how the "Evul SJWs are TAKING OVAH!!!" every time any RPG book included a non-"traditional" NPC or concept, or their MAGA peeners got in a twist. You're in luck, drama queens: the Taliban is hiring.

Looks like 54mm

I'd have guessed larger e.g. 1/12 scale, maybe even 1/6.

Could be, but those tend to be painted just oil, on that one I can see a mix with acrylics, and there's a lack of detail (not in the painting certainly) in the sculpt

Omega

This piece still impresses me.

That is a standard 25mm Mutant Chronicle mini.

And this is a HeroQuest mini also 25mm

Those are very nice pieces, but the both fail the 'multiple use' criteria I have for the cost they typically (assuming I could even paint them.)
