This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: grimshwiz;606833I did enjoy it as well, the players not so much. I based my list off of the top 3 we have done this past year.

Its really weird, glad to hear a confirmation of the same experience.  I was sure my players would absolutely love it; and they found it interesting but somehow it dragged on and they ended up feeling like it was not interesting enough in their actual play.

On the other hand, "Where Fallen Jarls Sleep" was really well received.

Ya I thought my players would have loved the place, but somehow it just seemed like too much dungeon for a side trek in the overall scope of our game. I still do like the adventure myself, but something was just missing for the players.

I can't say I am familiar with "Where Fallen Jarls Sleep".

Same here.  Who did that one?

Turcotte. It's a free Dragonsfoot module. Here's the download link:

and my review, which I just did, coincidentally, on Friday:

I'm so glad this kickarse module is finally getting some attention.

It reminds me that I need to ask John when we will finally see the 4th installment in the series.

My stuff is of course very good but it's outside the "age" asked by the OP.

I ran parts of Demonspore and Barrowmaze in my AD&D campaign. Both are worthwhile, but Demonspore ranks a bit higher IMO, in that it's more flexible & varied, although it has a slightly more raw production value. Barrowmaze was a little too easy for my experienced players using AD&D characters, which are implicitly more powerful than the Labyrinth Lord characters that Barrowmaze was designed for. (That's not meant to be a knock against Barrowmaze; but it may be preferable to run it using LL simply because of the various power level differences.)

It was awesome.

What are the other three in the series?

DF21: Beneath Back Towen (a review of which I should post tomorrow.) and
DF24: Stormcrows Gather (wilderness adventure)

I get the feeling there should be another one after DF24, but he lost interest or hasn't done it yet.

The series has grown on me a lot as I go through them. There's a nice consistent 'mythology' to them. If you can get past 'being a HERO' and the monotony of some of them then you'd have a decent little human-centric series. Actually, more than decent. Production values are top notch for a free series. It's one of the best free series, if not the best, and certainly ranks highly even when compared to commercial modules. When they are good they are very good. They just get a bit monotonous in places.

Part IV is written and really just needs production and layout (I have a copy to edit). Alas John has been sidelined by real life events and its hard to know when this will be completed.

I strongly recommend Red Tam's Bones as a great one off take on Jonathan Norrell and Mr Strange.

bryce0lynch

I was wrong, my Towen review is today and Stormcrows is tomorrow.

If you are going to undertake the series then I would suggest that you read Stormcrows first. It really delivers on a Northman/Scandinavian Epic vibe. Then go run the modules in series, having first thrown out all the wilderness stuff in the first two with the setting presented in Stormcrows.
