Title: The Fixins...
Post by: RPGPundit on September 08, 2006, 01:41:36 AM
What sort of "additionals" do you want in an RPG, that really do it for you?

I mean, there was a time when having a character sheet in a game was considered an "additional", something optional that was useful but not considered a required component. These days it is not so.

I'd say that one big one for me are maps; give me good maps and I'll be far more likely to love your game.

What else is there like that, which add appeal to a game's package?

Well... there are always the gameplay aides.
A plastic grid sheet (one side square, one side hex... just in case) and some erasible markers work wonders.

As for games themselves, I don't know. It would be nice if minis came with it for free, but that would be wierd for packaging with a book. Especially without money, or in PDF format. Printable foldup minis, however, might work. I wonder if anyone has done this thus far?

Politically Incorrect Games has printable minis, and they look quite nice.

Sweet.
I'm working on a group project (my first. just started.)

Drawing these things is going to make me feel very warm, fuzzy, and useful.

Also, a step-by-step character generation walkthrough. Especially for point buy systems (they always kind of bugged me... but it's what my group has opted for. *shrugs*)

S. John has a whole line of printable minis over at CumberlandGames.com, in addition to the fine minis from PIG that Jong mentioned.

For me? Maps, definitely. I'm positively slutty when it comes to good maps. I've got a couple of books in my collection that, if I looked into my heart of hearts, I know I bought just because they have some nifty cartography.

I have a confession.
Maps of countries, cities, and anything outdoors bore me.
But maps of interesting buildings really pique(sp?) my interest.

Overland maps, a good index (if not, a really good ToC will suffice for shorter games), and a character creation guide.  I also like it when games include a starting adventure (or two).

I was sorely disappointed that Sharn didn't come with an overview map.

Yeah... maps really aren't something you notice so much as they are something you notice the absence of.
