The Firefly License

I hear that MWP, publishers of the Serenity rpg, have also the Firefly license.

I liked Firefly, I liked Serenity. I don't for one moment see the point of buying this license.

The show lasted 14 episodes and then got a movie in which...
Spoiler
some main characters died
That's it. That's all there's ever going to be, bar some massive TV miracle. The setting isn't even that complicated or involved: humans settled planets, dress like cowboys, use cantonese phrases from time to time, fly in space. That's it.

Couldn't that money have been better spent? Why not go for the double and get the DC license as well as the Marvel one? Or bribe ninjas to steal the Judge Dredd license from fucking mongoose and do something decent with it. Or get the license to a TV show that's had more than half a season!
"Ghost Whistler" is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). Parental death, alien battles and annihilated worlds.

I'll actually add more to this: Firefly has a huge rabid fanbase. It will make them money. It isn't a waste at all for them to buy the license to make an rpg based on something that has a huge rabid fanbase.

I don't really care about Firefly, but its hardly a waste at all.

I'm a troll now because I can connect basic logic together and you can't?

Well at least the rules will be about as defined as the planetary mechanics of the setting.

I liked the show and film well enough, but if I wanted to play that kind of game I'd probably just use Traveler. The fact that its MWP, who seem to pretty much be doing just storygames these days means it won't be of any interest to me.

Didn't you get the memo, Your Worship?

RPG writers aren't supposed to make money.

Yeah, personally, between Traveller, H&H, and Mini Six I'm more than covered for Firefly game systems.

I don't get it. They had Serenity. How is Firefly any different. Sounds like a bunch of nothing.

The license is for the TV show, not for the movie. They can cover a lot more stuff, Brett.

yeah. It's sort of like how the LOTR licenses don't cover all the other stuff like the Silmarillion.

Except now they can use the whole universe not the parts that are covered in just one movie.

I'm wondering if the comics are included.  If they don't half ass the setting material it might still be worth a grab for cheap, I just wouldn't pay full price because Cortex+ is shit.

My problem is that its MWP...

Which means it is going to be yet another Cortex/Cortex+ system...

Which (IMHO) is the biggest piece of shit (other than Burning Wheel) game system still being peddled...

I FUCKING hate Cortex... And of course, another licensed product (Leverage, Marvel) I'd be interested in gets shit all over...

Fuck you Cortex...

Fuck you MWP for not realizing your system is Shit on Toast...

They do realise its shit on toast, the problem is its cortex+ shit on toast which makes it worse :)

It could be worse i guess, at least fox dont require the licence to be remade each time you want to sell outside the us like disney with the marvel licence lol

Dan Davenport

My guess is that while Serenity was Cortex, Firefly will be Cortex+, and hence a different game system using the same basic setting.

Which will mean that it won't appeal to me. But hey, if it makes them money, more power to them.
