This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

One might speculate that a considerable amount of underdark food sources would be molds and fungi, possibly with quite a few of these having seriously hallucinogenic properties.  I mean, you could just decide that actual underdark races were immune to these effects through aeons of building up tolerance, but what if that wasn't the case, and basically some of the underdark races were just high all the time?

There's a fungus that evolved in Chernobyl to 'eat' radiation. Something like that could evolve in areas of the underdark with lots of radioactive minerals.

You could also speculate that something like 'darkvision' works off that too - letting characters see using radiation rather than light (Gygax I think talked a bit about UV light below ground and how 'ultravision' works off that).

That's pretty cool.
Could explain derro being insane - in 3E I think they're part-human part-dwarf, so perhaps they lack the dwarves evolved ability to cope?

RPGPundit

Yeah, there'd be a lot of potential there, in underground societies that are basically constantly high.. imagine savage underdark tribes that somehow create a semi-coherent consensus among them of combining their hallucinations with reality.  Not to mention if some of the psychedelic molds besides their normal qualities actually did someone magical: a society that can see and talk with all their dead, or that exists outside of usual time, experiencing past, present and future at once.

Not to mention the monsters... it really creates the question of what would a beholder or a mind flayer be like if they WEREN'T constantly high?

Well...I mentioned Arduin? While all the items in the menu I did were original, the writing style here was actually inspired by the writing style from Arduin - Arduin's Lost Grimoire by David Hargreave has a completely insane menu for the evil "Dirty Dorg's" inn. Reproducing that from the Lost Grimoire for comparison. ('GS' are 'Gold Sovereigns').

Quote from: The Lost GrimoireA NOTE ON UNDER-CITIES
Immediately following is a "menu" from the most infamous and even legendary "Inn" in all of the undercities of Arduim "Dirty Dorg's". This place, deep beneath the sewers and tunnels under the capitol city of Talismonde, is supposed to pre-date the construction of even the first village that stood where now stands the mighty city. This may or may not be so but it surely has been there for at least a thousand or more years and is the only place in all the undercities where ones safety is actually guaranteed (or your money back!). The people of the upper streets come here to do their dealings with the denizens of the darkling ways (those too dangerous even for the normal run of the mill Thieves' and Assassins' Guilds!). The place is quite large and has several levels. There are "common rooms", hidden trysting places, secret meeting rooms and every manner of vice, perversion and criminal activity one can imagine ... but only if you have the price. Here Slavers sell their forbidden (in Arduin) wares, blacklisted Thieves and Assassins strike bargains with prospective employers, drugs and forbidden pleasures are freely indulged and even the darkest desires of the soul can be had. Yes, Dirty Dorg's is the hell hole of the multiverse, yet it too is a "nexus" in its own way - a meeting point between the saner, more lawful world above and that of the rankest, most mind-bending "alternatives" down below. Indeed, anything at all can be had here - for a price. Want a noble killed? A beauteous wench kidnapped for you? A submissive slave to cater to your every whim? The dark dreams of the dread Lotus-based drugs (or worse)? It's all yours.... for a price. In keeping with this there is presented here for your perusal just one of the "Special Menus" available at Dirty Dorg's. Read it and see just what money can buy in a world where anything and everything is for sale! And then think twice about visiting such a place!
