This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The Discordian question

My first post,I decided to try this forum because it was on the do not go there list, which of course meant that I had to check it out :) . Guess you could call me a refugee from the Reddit/OSR group. Always knew there was a far left bend to the OSR subreddit but viewing the whole "no X/Twitter links" madness was the last straw for me. I don't even care about Twitter but watching people get banned and attacked just because they disagree with the rule was a wake up call (maybe a "woke" up call). Anyway, my wife and I have been playing via Discord since COVID and I was wondering if there was a Discord server for the members of this site. I have tried several VTT's but found them to mostly be a waste of time and bandwidth. We find it much easier to find OSR players online since most locals only play 5E, how do you folks feel about the Discord and VTT experience?

Welcome! You'll find a wide variety of personalities and prerogatives here. Mine is to engage on tabletop roleplaying with sensible people, and ultimately promote my product line.

I am personally unaware of any Discord, though I'm sure someone could recommend a solid Discord server or two.
As far as gaming is concerned, I have no socio-political nor religious views.

I came here for the same reason. I've found numerous game-specific Discords, and some for local (to me) RPGers, but not just a general space for general OSR folks.
Running: D&D 5e, PF2e, Dragonbane
Playing: D&D 5e

I have found some OSR groups through Discord and met some cool people on OSR Discord servers. When running something I usually make a private server just for that game. Its great for hosting games but I find forums to be better places for exchanging ideas.

Also looking for sensible and reasonable people to game with, some don't dig the online thing, I get that but finding Oldschool players in any area can be a challenge. I've played with folks all over the globe online.

I have a few friends that use Discord extensively. And have talked with others that have.

Discord when used as a VTT has ALL the boons AND problems of every other VTT. Ease of finding players, difficulty of finding players, fake DMs and fake players. etc.

Its also become the go-to for various scammers and I have had a few try that stunt on me. I have no idea what they get from it but they are a problem.

So the usual VTT good, bad and ugly. You might have a great time. You might have a horrible time. Never know till you try.

Welcome to Mos Eisley.

No Discord for this forum, as I think it's redundant outside of actual gaming. I maintain my own Discord, but I reserve it only for using PC gaming peeps and my immediate tabletop group. It's handy to share maps and in-game paranoia note-passing, etc. I don't play virtually unless there is some special circumstances.

Might interesting to have one for RPGSite... but that is up to Pundit or whomever he wrangles to moderate it.

Discord has it's issues but it works better for me than the alternatives and it's nice to be able to play from the comfort of one's own home, even if it can't match the social interaction of face to face gaming.

I have two online games that we use Discord for voice and between-game chat, but we use full VTTs (Roll20 for D&D, Foundry for PF2e) for actual automation and maps.
Running: D&D 5e, PF2e, Dragonbane
Playing: D&D 5e

I've been playing online with a group that played together in college and then moved apart for a few years now. It works fine for the loose type of game we like to play. I hate basically all the VTTs, they complicate matters way beyond pen and paper and dice, which is how I like to play. We use owlbear rodeo right now, but only for dice. I don't trust 3rd party discord apps all that much, so I need to find a decent opensource one, and then we won't need anything besides discord.

Socratic-DM

Actually I'm super surprised the Pundit or any of the other big names on this server hadn't started a discord, seeing as pro Free speech TTRPG servers are in short supply. someone should get on that.
