This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The Day of Living Dangerously

I'm currently in the preproduction stage of this campaign, and damn it I need some system suggestions. This always happens, think of an idea, get stuck with the rules aspect of it...:D

Anyway the campaign is inspired by the doc Crisis is Our Brand and is set in present day Thailand over the course of one day. The pcs are consultants who are advisers to the newly installed PM who is holding free and fair elections for the very first time. Each session will last no more than three hours and will make up one hour of in-game time.

Some examples of possible situations that the pcs may have to handle are as follows.

1 - Twitchy generals testing the waters in the hopes of sustaining indefinite military rule.

2 - Elements of disatisfaction between newly reconciled Islamic separatist hoping to stir up dissent.

3 - A journo of Friskian proportions smelling blood and closing in for a kill

The above is just a rough idea as to what the pcs may face. They would have a lot of influence, not to mention access to local resources - media, security apparatus, etc.

So this will be, a mostly role playing campaign. I doubt the pcs would have the opportunity for up close and personal violence - they would get others to carry out their work , dirty or otherwise.

So, I'm looking for something, without much crunch. Something where combat is deadly and quick - one never knows when the pcs may inadvertently get into some serious shit. An emphasis on rping would be cool, though it's not a requirement.

So any suggestions?

Illegible Smudge

Sounds like a pretty neat concept. I'm not sure how many sessions you'll be able to pack in without it getting a bit implausible that this much could happen in a day, but I guess 24 manages it (sort of). It depends what you mean by not much crunch. Off the top of my head, I'd be tempted to suggest SilCore as a rules-medium game. Combat is fast and dangerous, and tends to discourage players from getting into violence. Nice simple and quick rules too, if you don't mind the low range of ability scores.

If that's too complex, I'd probably go with FATE.

And if Fate's too complicated, then Bonza.  There are really no limits to how many systems we can suggest, though. I mean, have you seen the free rpgs link in my big list of links? Over 600 free rpgs...
