I voted for OSE, but I have a soft spot for White Box FMAG.

Weird poll...S&W Whitebox IS FMAG, but it also has an option for S&W (any version).

Actually not quite.  FMAG is produced by someone else, based on the S&W White Box.  And OSE includes the advanced option which isn't really a clone, but a hybrid, like Advanced Labyrinth Lord.  Hence the word adjacent.  I didn't include stuff I haven't seen (like Blue Holme & LOTFP) and I just forgot about ACKS.  So yeah, not scientific, but interesting in terms of responses & preferences.

OSE Classic Fantasy, is BX Only.  Advanced, is a 2nd flavor option.  OSE offers straight BX, as well as Advanced.

I have the Brave Halfling version and five copies of FMAG...they look almost 100% identical to me, honestly. Can someone point out the differences if I'm just not seeing them?

That version is literally just a reformatting of S&W White Box. I have the Seattle Hill Games version, which has a few optional rules added, but the core is still just reformatted S&W White Box.
Klytus, I'm bored. What plaything can you offer me today?

An obscure body in the S-K System, Your Majesty. The inhabitants refer to it as the planet... "Earth".

I like most of these, but here is my reasons for liking BFRPG more than most:

Also, C&C, OSE, S&W and OSRIC are all fine...

Meh. I have the real things somewhere if I ever really want to play them again.

My jam from that era of games would be Palladium Fantasy 1e (1983; basically contemporaneous with the Red Box... which was my first RPG).

Fair enough; that's why this exercise is fun.  I find BFRPG perhaps the dullest game on the market (maybe just above Shadowdark), but everyone has their preferences.

Someone else mentioned Palladium.  I've never met anyone who played any of their games and I think I've only seen used copies in person.  But some people apparently really like it.

I should still have Palladium 1 and 2e. Even GMed it as was big into Palladium for a span. GMed alot of Beyond the Supernatural, a little TMNT, After the Bomb, and a fair amount of Macross/Robotech.

Thread derail: I recently got two of the hardcover special edition Palladium RPG books (not purpose; ordered one, it got cancelled, ordered from a different place, both showed up). Been playing it since 1990...It's a great game, pretty dark and gritty, with an interesting magic system. Not a fan of 2nd, though. The Riftiziation (LOL) of the game resulted in a massive power creep and sort of got rid of the cool atmosphere. That book is useful for making Rifts spellcasters, though, so I still have a copy. I was running a game a while back and one of the players had a Mind Mage. Reminded me of how psionics CAN fit into fantasy and not look like an exercise in frustration (AD&D...)
It takes considerable knowledge just to realize the extent of your own ignorance.

If it has ascending AC, and some character customization options so your character and mine are not identical if we're both the same class, then its for me.

Also, being free to download helps a lot.

Basic Fantasy was what I picked, but I actually prefer Olde Swords Reign for fighter customization options that BF just doesn't have in their core rulebook.
I'm glad for you if you like the top selling game of the genre.  Me, I like the road less travelled, and will be the player asking we try a game you've never heard of.

I chose OSRIC, which I mainly use as a master reference book/source for playing 1e. That said I use For Gold and Glory the same way since it just compiles everything into one book, almost like a physical SRD. I also use those to recommend 1e and 2e to my friends who don't want to track down copies or each of the three core books of those editions.

Yup, boils down to taste.

I tried Palladium a few times but I can't get into it. Shadowdark doesn't entice me. GURPS, OTOH, feels very simple to me, although I don't like the lengthy Pc creation.

The games you played first probably influence the games you like most too.
