A lot of people, myself included, do just that: shorten the CBs to 12/15.  It works just fine.

In StarSIEGE, however, I'd stick with the 12/18 model, because equipment can give a hefty bonus in many cases.

I do this as well, and it works well.  I don't know about in StarSIEGE, b/c I haven't played it yet.

C&C was key to me looking into pre-3E D&D again.  Kudos for that and I find the PHB still useful. Also got me into one of Skathros' C&C games on DF. Hella fun that was!

It's a bummer that there's bad blood re: C&C, though I think I get why (not pointing fingers here, folks on both sides have contributed to it). That there are sides, instead of just folks having fun playing games and using what's IMO pretty compatible good stuff from wherever to their own favored D&D flavor of the moment.

For my part, I don't find the old-style AC to be an hindrance in play.  Players typically write down their target numbers on their character sheet, which I find works very fast (and with no calculation at all).  The DM still has a table to reference, but it's either on his screen or on some reference sheets in front of him.

It may be that I was playing RC at a fairly young age (10-11), but we found the target number system to be a major hassle, especially in the mid-levels and with negative ACs. It was less of a hassle for us when we played 2nd (a few years later), but it still involved a fair bit of table consultation and could drag down the game quite a bit if someone was tired or distracted or even too excited, and was screwing up their calculations.
