This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The off-worlders are at it again. . . (wherein I bitch and moan)

The Fox speaks wisdom.

Sometimes I will go yet further and say: The quest for the elusive ideal system (group, whatever) is like unto the quest for THE ONE. And that is a futile quest.

Not because it's so improbable to find THE ONE. But rather because THE ONE exists only as a figment of one's imagination. That is why THE ONE won't survive contact with reality. Because it doesn't exist in reality.

Hence, as in love so in gaming: to find pleasure in what actually exists is not to compromise. It is rather to be properly in touch with reality.

Quote from: J ArcaneWe've argued this before, and you wouldn't be honest then, why the fuck should I expect you to be honest now?

You're a coward and a liar, and that's that.  I've no interest in travelling that road again.

Having thought about this some more, J Arcane, I suspect that you may have formed this '3e D&D bashing' impression of me based on some criticisms that I may have leveled against 3e at some point in the 4000+ posts that I've made in various RPG fora.

Now, I don't think expressing a preference for one version of D&D (e.g. RC or C&C) over another (e.g. 3e D&D) is at all the same thing as 'bashing' the latter version.  But perhaps you misinterpreted what I said and formed this impression based on that misinterpretation, or perhaps I expressed my views in an unclear or hyperbolic way.  I don't know (I can't remember every post I ever made, and I'm sure a few were not well considered).  In any case, I sincerely regret if I offended you at some point in the past.

I definitely do not think that I go around trolling 3e threads in order to bash the game.  Indeed, I think that I go out of my way to note that different people have different tastes, and 3e is not my cup of tea (at least to DM), but that I often play it, and have nothing against people who prefer it.  I sometimes am rather vehement in defending C&C and/or RC D&D against what I take to be unfair criticisms, but that's a different thing altogether from 'bashing' 3e.

In any case, I don't like being called a liar or a coward, and I'm genuinely puzzled by how extreme your attacks on me have been (both here and in the earlier thread you mentioned).

For the sake of civility, I offer to continue to not bash 3e D&D here (and if you think I have bashed 3e at the RPGsite, then please show me the relevant post(s), and I will try to avoid doing so again).  In return, I would be grateful if you would refrain from making personal attacks against me.

Thank you!  :)

When I'm playing system doesn't matter that much, esp. if it comes down to playing or not playing at all. I trust a good GM to be able to handle their game and a good group is a good group. When running I'm more "picky" as I have to actually run the thing but if it comes down to having a group to play a game with or not at all, the group trumps. I still have to pitch the game afterall.

I'm not making any money out of gaming and the likes of Gary Gygax, Gregg Stafford, or Ron Edwards can't absolve my sins or help me along the path to Nirvana. :pundit:

I chalk a lot of bile up to playing at[/b] instead of just actually playing[/b]. But then here I am posting about gaming on a web forum...:o

Quote from: RedFoxSorry if that's rambling and not very concise.

No, no. . . that's great advice. I discussed this briefly in the feature story of the Winter 2006 Silven Trumpeter and agree wholeheartedly. I was recently reminded of why I got into RPGs (i.e., to have fun) and realized that I hadn't been getting much of that lately due to my own unreasonable demands on life.

Quote from: RedFoxWhen your goals are not so lofty (say, getting together with your friends, tossing dice, and having adventures) as your desires (playing through a dramatic adventure with the intensity of your favorite book and the excitement of your favorite action movie!), you tend to have a lot more fun.

IME this is very easy to do but I do agree that sometimes expectations get in the way of having fun. One of the reasons for this could be that not everyone is on the same page and the biggest problem - besides time -that groups have...they don't communicate.
