If you can find College of Wizardry, a wizard school supplement by Bruce Cordell and released by TSR in the late 2e era, there are some a few cool pics of pointy hats, which imply that they are a symbol of status for wizards at the College.

The cover of B1: In Search of the Unknown (1979 editions) features a pointy hatted wizard (with stars on his hat!) exploring a forest of giant mushrooms, with a couple of fighters and a dwarf. :)
