This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The 4th edition D&D group that I am a player with has suddenly had our session cancelled for tomorrow.

So I said this in an e-mail to the group:

QuoteWould anyone want to try a session where I ran a "one-off" session for whoever can make it??

I got this back in reply:

QuoteI'll be around in the afternoon, so I'll give a "one-off" a go. .......
Anyone else?  - David M.

SO, I'll likely be using GURPS because it has the rules mechanics that I know best. I have some vague ideas - but anyone got any good suggestions for a 3 to 4 hour one-off game session?

We've been plasying D&D 4/e, but that guy's girlfriend is also a player with the group and she is a MAJOR fan of STAR TREK :VOYAGER.

Our usual meet up & starting time is 4:30pm at the store that I work at.

There is your answer Ed, throw together a bunch of Pre-gen Red shirts and the scenario could be something like  "Once again Cpt. Janeway has needlessly stuck her nose where it does not belong, and stranded security team planet side, since neither Paris or Chakoty were in the group its up to the security team to get back to the ship alive, or remain alive on the surface long enough for Janeway to patch Neelix/Holographic Doctor up and get back into transport range..".

Hi Ed,

If it is okay to plug my own written stuff, I would suggest this:
http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product_info.php?products_id=56717&filters=0_0_0&manufacturers_id=2182 (it is also on enworld and rpgnow)
The rules are easy (one could use GURPS easy with it) and I've run it a few times at cons. Both times it took about 3.5 hours.

Good luck! -Dan

I suggest downloading The Fate of Terra Ariel and changing the names a little.

(Under the assumption that you still have a copy of Savage Worlds.)

Pre-gen characters for them.

I would try to run something totally different then D&D. Star Trek might work, or maybe some Gurps Traveller?

Gurps Traveller with the names filed off so that it's kinda star trekey but not really.

That would be Gurps: Prime Directive

That is perfect one-off adventure material, though I would allow players to play named members of the crew -- not Janeway, but the black vulcan, or the annoying white guy, or the asian dude, or the dude with the face tattoos.  As you can tell, I'm a big fan of the series.

Voyager stops at Planet XB1 to replenish its stores.
An away team is sent to the surface.
An alien spacecraft launches from a nearby moon.
It uses some alien tech to fling Voyager outside the solar system.
Away team discovers the planet is a breeding world for the aliens.
The aliens aren't interested in excuses, they just want to kill the invaders.
The away team must avoid capture and survive until they can reestablish contact with Voyager, which occurs as soon as Voyager is back in communicator range (which I assume is greater than transport range).
Once the reestablish contact, Voyager can zip past the planet at low warp speeds and snag them with the transporter...assuming they can survive until Voyager is in position!

Yes, I KNOW - thats the reason I was running a GURPS:TRAVELLER campaign from April of 2004 to this past summer of 2008.

Thats why I'm going into a version of "GM withdrawl" these past 4 months.

END RESULT?: Well , TWO of the three people showed up. We mutually decided to go ahead and start converting or making characters for a potential 'back-up' for when this might happen again.

I didn't have enough time to do GURPS 4/e pre-gens......however I brought two 3-ring binders of SJG-made NPCs and characters from the past 20 years of more of GURPS. These characters I've had organozed alphabetically by what job, profession, role, or srereotype they would be in a campaign. About 50% of them were meant to be NPCs  - but many of them are easily converted as characters for player use.

It looks like it will be "cyberpunk-lite" or some kind of Post-Cyberpunk thing...with possible travel to  the moon or Mars if it goes for more than one game session.
