Title: [Thai historical movie... and rpg?] King Naresuan
Post by: Kyle Aaron on April 24, 2007, 02:22:37 AM
I want to see this movie (http://www.kingnaresuanmovie.com/index_eng.php), and then have David R run us through a campaign based on it.

Let's talk about this period in Thai history. I don't care if you have to steal it from wikipedia, let's just start talking!

Interesting idea JimBob, but I doubt many would share my (your) enthusiasm.

A brief look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naresuan of the Black Prince reveals an era ripe for adventure. I mean it's entirely possible that the pcs begin the campaign as children and part of Naresuan's entourage when he was the "guest" of the Burmese. Training and learning with him they become his loyal companions when he is returned and becomes governor of  Phitsanulok. They then become part of his journey to legendhood.

Research would probably reveal many historical "folds" where one could set a variety of adventures, but I'd probably continue with what I set up in the beginning, a kind of Henry V (Branagh's version) but with Muay Thai :D

David R

Oh, rock on!  I can see the appeal this story has for movie-makers.  It's got a Judah ben Hur/Messala story of enemies raised as brothers, big battles, sumptuous decors and costumes, martial arts and swordfights, a king freeing his people, heroes with divided loyalties, elephants and tigers, oh my!

Yeah, elephants on one side, tigers on the other. It's the ultimate showdown.

But seriously, thanks for starting this thread, Jimbob. This is the first I've heard of the movie and it looks awesome.

That is actually extremely productive. Someone could make a campaign out of those! I could, but the players I have are not interested in that sort of historical detail.

You know that "DM of the Rings" strip where the GM is reading out the Tolkienesque flavour fic to set the atmosphere of the game, and the players are talking over him and saying, "is there a brothel in this town? No? This town sucks!" Well, that's how I feel when trying to build atmosphere with my current bunch of players.

One of them just wants to run around blowing shit up, another would like to do more complex stuff but isn't confident enough with his English expression - "but it's easy to say I tear his head off" - another is pretty thespy and the fourth is just along to watch. So in practice it's hack vs thesp, and the hack usually wins.

But I'd love to play in such a game as Thai historical. I just don't know any players who'd be keen on it, still less run it... :hissyfit:

QuoteAyutthaya began as an ancient settlement named after Rama's legendary kingdom in India.

It's importance in Thai history began when a cholera outbreak forced Phya U-Thong, the ruler of the principality of U-Thong (today known as Suphan Buri), to evacuated his people. He officially established his seat in Ayutthaya in 1350, after three years of preparation, when he assumed the title Ramathidibodi I.

The Ayutthaya kings became very powerful moving east to take Lopburi a former Khmer stronghold and then, in 1431, on to Angkor the great capital city of the Khmer empire.

One could set a campaign during this period. This is definitely a time of high adventure

No kidding.  I could make a campaign out of the Floating Market of Muang Boran alone.
