It pisses me off that they are doing it via Kickstarter.  An established publisher that's already printing and shipping books should be able to reintroduce a product without turning to the scam machine.

I will not support the KS campaign.  If they turn it out as a regular product and start doing source books again, then I will buy them.

Side note, if you're a small operation and you're doing a KS, I will consider it.  I have done KS before and will do it again for the right project.  It just raises a lot of red flags for me when you're talking an established company with an established IP.

WeirdGuy I did not put you in the same category.

It's just that some outside of this forum are insisting it should be an big thing and seem to want to get offended on PB behalf that many like myself are just shrugging our shoulders and don't think it's important.

I might go for the reprint as my old copy is pretty beat up. Other than it's not an impressive an accomplishment for the company. What's next getting Robotech agsin. They need something new and fresh not living in the past.

Oh, don't worry.  I didn't take it that way.  I know the internet is opaque as shit when it comes to knowing what people intended it to "sound" like.

I agree that Palladium hasn't had a good IP in a long time.  They have released new games over the years, but none of them interest me in the slightest.  Splicers is like a weird Terminator Judgment Day game, but based on Technology Overlords vs Biological Rebels.  System Failure is another, and its about weird bug monster coming out of the electrical grid (and was based on bugs in the system during Y2K taken literally).  And then there was Dead Reign, a zombie apocalypse.

None of those sound good.

You can also mention Rifts Chaos Earth, but it is more of a World Book/Source Book for Rifts, even though it does have the full rules in it, making it stand-alone.

There was a part later in the podcast where that topic of new IP was brought up, and they briefly talked about pie in the sky dreams of getting more known IP's to make games from.  The two brought up were Space Battleship Yamato, and the other was Gundam.  They're never going to get those IP, so who cares?  And as a side note, I may have accidentally started some rumors I should not have.

Space Opera ala Star Wars was another (and apparently they were the 1st runner up to get that IP, but lost to West End Games), but they said they already sort of have that.  Phase World.  While it requires the Rifts rulebook to make it work, Phase World is almost its own setting, and I agree.  I just wish that spell magic had NOT been a thing in that setting, and rely only on super powers and psionics, and introduce Phase power as the 3rd supernatural element, and ditch magic.  Steampunk, riveted together "Dwarven Iron Ships" running on literal magic is not what I want in my Space Opera.

For me, the game I would want them to make is a genre they've never touched.
I'm glad for you if you like the top selling game of the genre.  Me, I like the road less travelled, and will be the player asking we try a game you've never heard of.

Bruwulf

Phase World always seemed too undefined and gonzo to really be a "setting". It was just... a thing that existed, but mostly just got mined for munchkin stuff for Rifts.

I never encountered anyone actually playing an explicitly Phase World game.

Going back to the original announcement.

I didn't mention this, but there will be TWO books they're putting out.

TMNT 2024 book-1 = The TMNT RPG with Trucking Turtle and Turtle go Hollywood combined into one book.

TMNT 2024 book-2 = Transdimension TMNT, TMNT Adventures, and TMNT Guide to the Universe.

So, you get six old books mashed into two new books with new art.

And they're making an edit pass to fix a few small things, layout and such, but they're trying to NOT change the game that much.  It is not broke, don't fix it.
I'm glad for you if you like the top selling game of the genre.  Me, I like the road less travelled, and will be the player asking we try a game you've never heard of.

Like, wtf...did they read my message and do this purposefully to fuck with my mind? Gahh, now I have to seriously think about it.
It takes considerable knowledge just to realize the extent of your own ignorance.

My gut tells me that this is going to be closer to the Star Wars WEG reprint that came out, where it's not like the company that produced it had reacquired the license to make MORE of the game, but just to reprint that specific chunk.

Unlike the Star Wars reprint. (Which was very good, I got my copy) This kickstarter has an excellent chance of being delayed and having many other issues, if it doesn't downright fail in part or in full.

Buy these off the shelf, if they ever make it there, if someone want them. Do not give PBooks/KSiembieda a dime until then.
The notion of an exclusionary and hostile RPG community is a fever dream of zealots who view all social dynamics through a narrow keyhole of structural oppression.

I understand the sentiment, but I think Kickstarter has just proven to be too useful for small companies operating on tight margins, which describes about 90% of the industry--it lets them gauge interest and print runs much more accurately, gather funding ahead of time, and take advantage of promotional opportunities, FOMO, etc.

Of course, how you handle it makes a big difference. And based on the chatter coming out of TBP and ENWorld, Palladium has further handicapped themselves in those markets (which, admittedly, aren't very Palladium-friendly to begin with) by announcing this on an un-Marked podcast. :)

While it is nice to see TMNT rpg back in orint, I wish as a company they would invest in new IPs. Not to mention knowing PB the reprint will be 2-5 years late and simply be a rehashed, Recycled product with a new cover and maybe an handful of new art. With virtually nothing changed including typos.

As for no PDFs that is a dumb as fuck decision to make. So no one will pirate the " new " book. Good luck with that. Everytime they take an tentative step toward as an company they insist on taking 50 steps back,

They got the Titan Robotics Rifts Kickstarter out slightly earlier than expected and with all the dealing they had to make with Paramount, which seemed pretty demanding on Paramount's side for wanting to ensure the rpg comes out in the 40th Anniversary of the original TMNT comics first coming out... Palladium will get this done right.

Who cares about the PDF. This wasn't Palladium's decision. Paramount dictated this, so getting mad at Palladium is pretty dumb.

Yeah, Phase World is not space opera and Palladium considering it their space opera game/setting is a bit lame. It's very much just a Rifts setting.

Palladium does need new IPs. They don't have traditional space opera, cyberpunk or urban fantasy RPGs.

BadApple

Rifts was always kinda broken.  Too unbalanced and too easy to go full munchkin.  We all loved it at my table in HS but it took a lot of discipline to make it a functional game.  In the end, the mechanics of Palladium aren't great (but better than a lot of crap out there) it was the magic touch of Kevin in making the game world that made it special.

TMNT/After the Bomb/Ninjas and Super Spies was much better at balancing a party and offered a very cool alternative to anything else.  It was always a secondary campaign but it lasted for over 2 years and everyone loved it.  (Yes, we blended all of these together for our game.0

I would have loved Kevin and Co. attempt a clean and original scifi setting with cyberpunk influences.  It didn't happen and I feel that it was the biggest missed opportunity in RPGs.

Please.....Kevin....get with the times and update that clunker of a system.  I own the original TMNT RPG and you would have to give me a new system to get me super interested again.

Unfortunately not ever going to happen because nothing is wrong with the system according to him even if he okays con games with his house rules version of the existing system.

Made worse by too many fans of the existing system hiding behind the sunken cost fallacy. Meaning that because they bought the older products, PB cannot ever release a new system. All because some of the older fans bought older material.

Banjo Destructo

I know there is some modern hype for TMNT, but are the people interested in TMNT going to want to deal with the stuff that Palladium is known for in their games? Wouldn't something like a savage worlds version of TMNT work better for that crowd?

Steve Dubya

I cannot fathom that any more than the smallest fraction of the books from this KS are ever going to see table play; these are strictly going to be nostalgia, collector purchases.
