This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Does anyone know if TSL has multiple actions? I can't recall 2e having them.

tenbones

Yep you can make make multiple actions with a cumulative -5 penalty to each successive action.

Actually I figure I might just pick up a copy once it comes out, provided i'm not hand-to-mouth broke at the time.

But mostly because I'm hoping that I'll actually have some hard information on these various races and cultures, which is one of my many, if minor, complaints with the old books... lots of races and cultures that are mostly implied by their thumbnail write-ups in the pregen area, coupled with an equally slim gazateer entree later if you can find it for race x or y....

I'm a details kinda guy, I guess.
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.

Are there feats or talents of the likes found in Atlantis? Can HP be increased after PC Creation?

I was going through the Talislanta 5 books last night to look at the path-based character generation and that's got about a page and a half (well, two pages minus a stat block and an illustration) writeup of each race, if that helps any.

tenbones

Character Generation is not going to be *quite* as in-depth as 5e (last I checked). You pick a race (gives you starting stats typical of each race-type including starting HP), you pick a role (which is a package of skills specific to each role. Each role also modifies your PC's stats). Then you get 3 customization points to modify your stats, skills. You can also lower stats to gain more customization points. Lastly you can get certain bonuses depending on your Tribe (which is itself a meta-character using the Tribe rules).

In terms of HP - once your character is created the only way your HP ever goes up is if your Constitution stat gets raised.

Feats - Not sure if those made it into the final cut. My last copy of the rules doesn't have them.

I hear you.

So. The big conceit of the setting *and* the rules is the Tribe. You generate your tribe (optionally) and it will give you all the background you'll need. While each tribe has its own traditions, etc. their cultural roots are thin on purpose - because all tribes live under the existential threat of the Gyre, and general survival. In many ways you're given all the seed information you'll need about your race, but your specific tribe will be largely lensed through that with your own hand in the Tribe Creation process.

There are rules for Tribes that govern how the Tribe operates based on its stats, intentions, goals, and their general emphasis represented by your tribal colors and totem. These will grant bonuses to all their tribe-members. So it behooves the PC's to play accordingly, including to do things that change their Tribe (or attempt to join/destroy other Tribes) as they see fit.

So long-story short - the implications of your tribe and its backstory are directly tied to your character generation/tribe generation. You don't have to worry about your tribes thousand-year history, simply because no tribe has that (well that's not entirely true, but you get my meaning)lived that long continuously. Your race might be old, but due to the apocalyptic nature of the setting, very few have been around to create long-lasting forms of civilization - that is one of the possible purposes of the game. That *your PC's* are the ones that start that process going that may (or may not) create the "New Era" of Talislanta as seen in the various other editions of the game. Or more likely something *entirely* different.

Edit as a side-note I can give you a general run-down of any of the races.

A brief example of what to expect from the tribes to inform your race choice my basic structure was:

Race - General description of appearance and dress and sub-racial differences.
Ancestry and History - Covers the history of the race from the context of the post-cataclysm perspective (unless the race has collective memory of the pre-Fall era, even then it's usually mythic.)
Culture - Day to day life based largely on the traditional territories of that race. Culture-specific beliefs that they generally follow and operate from in terms of conduct. These can vary *wildly* from race to race.
Tribal Governance - How the race *generally* operates in terms of its hierarchy (if any).
Worldview - How the race sees itself in the context of the setting and primary concerns and motives.

In my usual write-ups each one was a solid page of information. Editing process probably cut some of that down. While there are 23-PC races, we have a lot more with write-ups for all of them.

Spike

Just for the curious, I checked my bookshelf. I've got a 3rd Edition book that I've had for twenty plus years now based on the price tag (Edward McKays, a half-priced bookstore in North Carolina, meaning I bought it prior to August of 1999), and the Naturalists Guide, published in 87 and my copy is only placeable by the gold sticker on the back saying its available exclusive from Wizards of the Coast.

For some reason the rules make me think of the much later Waste World game, which I've been playing around with quite a lot lately... strange how my memory of that game so wildly differed from the actual content.

Hi all - just wanted to drop by here to thank tenbones for helping promote the new Talislanta Savage Land RPG, and to thank those of you who have helped back the game on Kickstarter. Thanks so much for your support, and for the kind words about Talislanta. If you have any Q's about the original game or TSL, post them here and - assuming I filled out the registration form correctly and receive email notifications - I'll do my best to answer them. :)

How many skills are there in TSL? Are there feat/talent like abilities or just skills?

I just counted and got about 73 Skills & Special abilities. No feats - the TSL system was not modeled after Khepera's Atlantis system, but is more like Tal2 with a number of milieu-specific additions.

Steve could you break out the actual Skill list from the Special Abilities? I know it got trimmed down from the other editions.

Spike

Wait... Kephera's Atlantis is Talislanta?  Well... that makes me a moron.  I thought I recognized that Omega System symbol on the back, but I didn't put the pieces together.
