This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Taking bribes

I don't even look at it in terms of a transaction.  It's not like, "Buy XP for beer!"  That's not how it's presented, and that's not how I run it.

My philosophy is more like, "Earn XP for improving the game environment."  Bringing refreshments is one easy way to do this.  Bringing minis for use during the session is another one.  Art, too, goes a long way - I have one player who loves drawing the other players' characters and their memorable events, and she consistently gets XP for that.

I don't give them XP for personal favors to me.  I'm just another player, who happens to be playing everyone in the world who isn't them.

Sure, my players would likely do this anyway - and do, for one-shots and the like - but why shouldn't they be rewarded for making an effort?

My group has a standing bribe of XP for food, and at least one person gets the XP every game session. We like gaming almost as much as we like not starving to death. It's a great arrangement.

Obryn got it in before me...the basic principle is "improve the game experience, gain XP/build points/plot consideration". Calling it 'bribes' implies that those gains benefit -only- the GM, and that's not kosher. Unless you're playing something like SLA or HoL.
Heroism is no more than a chapter in a tale of submission.

The internet recognizes only five forms of self-expression: bragging, talking shit, ass kissing, bullshitting, and moaning about how pathetic you are. Combine one with your favorite hobby and get out there!

Mmm, fair enough. I'd forgotten that clones were -always- a dime a dozen when we played.

It's more I bribe my players with XP. I offer XP for all kinds of Out of Game reasons. Buying books for the game (you can never have enough corebooks running around), buying snacks (for everybody), updating the games wiki, giving rides to other players...etc.

However, this fact is laid out bare before the game, anything you do to improve the game or the enjoyment of the players involved, earns you XP.

Does "refraining from kicking people in the Jimmy" count? ;)

Not in my games, but not refraining from "kicking in the Jimmy" does!
