This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Taking bribes

Last night as a GM I started taking bribes while running Sla Industries.

About three hours before the game one of my players called me up with some ideas for his character.  He's a good player and comes up with some good ideas so I was liking what I was hearing.  Then he tells me he needs twenty more character points and if there was anything he could do that would make me give them to him.  He brought up the idea of bringing some extra snacks to the game and what not.

About that time I looked in my wallet and saw a lone dollar and I also knew my bank account was running low.  So I thought for a second and said I could use some soda for the game.

Got to the game and I had a two liter bottle waiting for me.

Later I was getting smokes for XP each from another player.  Mainly because I'm broke and can't afford my own.

Anybody else do this?

Nah, I hate it with a fiery passion.  It just goes directly counter to my feelings of what's fair play.

Character points, soda... not sure who's bribing whom? Sounds more like good clean honest capitalism.

I'd bribe you simply for *running* SLA Industries.

Wow! And they still game with you? I think my hair is on fire.

Edit: In a way it's supposed to be sorta a compliment.
Edit: Also:  I wouldn't do this.

I dunno I don't like.
Just doesn't feel right.

I've said it before :

If you remind the GM ("ME") to eat healthily during the game - and even get him a plate   - then your character has nice things happen to her.

If you brought enough snacks for the whole room to share  - maybe an extra character point that night.

Philosophically its like JimBob's cheeto thing - but my bunch is more into pretzels, chocolate and popcorn.
Also it looks like we're going to start taking turns cooking for game sessions.
Beef stew is up for next time. Angel's player is making that.

NOW, if they ever start giving me back or foot massages...."so you want to be special assistant to Archduke Norris huh?"   Ed continues:

Well this is something that I do.  The main reason I am doing so now is that I am broke, always been on a tight budget supporting a family and all but he sudden jump in gas prices here along with a few other sudden unexpected necessary expenses took me by suprise.  Once I get stable with the finances again I may not do this anymore.  Guess it depends on how everything works out over the next few weeks.

*shrug* In my group if you know a friend is going through a rough patch cash-wise, you get things for him/her without thinking of getting anything back game-wise.

I was composing much the same response.  I happen to have some disposable income so I bring the scotch.  T gets food every single week for the group, so someone always slips him some cash or (in the case of our brokest but well-connected-farm-wise) fresh eggs for the pantry.  It all works out.

So what you need to do now, is start hinting what you might be willing to do in return for sexual favors.

Just sayin'...

I give out XP to folks who bring food and/or beverages to game nights.  It's hardly bribing; I just like rewarding people for improving the fun of the game.  Since I prefer a casual gaming environment, this certainly qualifies. :)

Ironically, I don't think I ever actually eat most of the snacks that anyone brings...  Unless it's beer, that is.

I try to keep away from special treatment based on stuff being brought to the table or not being brought, as the case may be. When DMing, an impartialiality seems to work best for me. Outside of game, you definitely reward those who bring in the snacks and make it a better environment (by that, I include helping to clean up afterwards or offering to carpool). As always, YMMV.

I play online allowing me to dodge any awkward situation like that. First, because I get the cowardly outing by throwing my "internet balls" into messages and saying no. Second, because I don't have to deal with you face to face.

But looking pass the simplicity of net playing, I'd say no because this act is a slippery slope. The first night a girl plays, or even worse, the GM's girlfriend plays, the campaign will be over, chao and such.

Well, one of my players is my housemate of appropriate gender, so any favoritism would rapidly spiral out of control, so in general it's a no. In fact, I use anti-favoritism on people. they get my attention and weird stuff happens to them. :hehe:

On principle, however, I think it's a fine and dandy thing, like any other social transaction.  Hey, if giving a girl flowers is a valid way to get sex, why isn't bringing pizza a valid way to earn XP?
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.
