Ive fleshed out a corner of the Symbaroum map a bit, written up some details and conjured up a couple new critters. Feel free to take a look if interested.

What's the vibe on this? I was tempted by the drivethru summer sale but couldn't afford it. The core book looks goregous (big plus!), but the setting seems a wee bit bland. You walk around a big forest.

The supplement looks like it adds a great deal.

Would love to read it.

What am I missing? Sorry if o/t but...ah who cares, enthusiasm is always a boon.

I don't know where to start to be honest. Symbaroum ticks a lot of the boxes for me.

Here are some of the high points for me:

Low(ish) dark fantasy with simple rules where the setting is dripping with atmosphere.

It's pretty horrific, set after a brutal war where humans have fled and settled in new fertile lads after facing some terrible dark lords. Where the land was left bereft and scorched.

It has quite a different take on the traditional fantasy setting. It's based on Scandinavian folklore for a start. But the races are pretty different. For example, Elves are really dangerous (depending on their age) and are not nice to come up against. Dwarves are different too. Ogres, goblins (which are pretty cool) and changelings are also an option. Some of the races are linked but I don't want to give away too much (spoilers). The creatures that do live with humans are considered second class citizens which can provide some great RPGing ideas. Many have to live outside in shanty towns.

The threats from corruption are extremely real in the game. Not just from practicing magic, which can be deadly to the user if not practiced with care. But there are places you really don't want to go, or stay too long. Or you'll start to get mutations, they can be temporary, if you're careful but you run the risk of becoming permantly tainted so you might end up burnt at the stake! Or worse turning into a mindless abomination killing machine.

The setting itself has a lot of potential for political intrigue too. There are many factions, including some nasty bastards hiding in the dark. There are always tensions between the ruling humans, barbarians tribes and the elves.

The game is set up, but not limited to, exploring an immense forest called Davokar. It's so big that only 'light Davokar' has been explored (to some degree). Dark Davokar is mostly shrouded in mystery and considered exceedingly dangerous. The main reasons for exploring Davokar light is to find the rich pickings from a vast previous civilization called Symbar. It's a bit like the gold rush of the wild west, but a lot more dangerous.

The whole big bad forest of Davokar is the centerpiece of the published stuff so far but my campaign hasn't even included it. There's plenty of room for expansion elsewhere and more or less conentional fantasy adventure.

Yeah, that's very true... It's a damn big world out there so you don't have to start or even go near Davokar at all.

Your material here is outstanding.
My rules and comments about good GMing:
  • Improvise as much as you can
  • A character sheet is a list of items that tell you what the story should be about
  • As a GM, say "maybe" and ask your players to justify a "yes"
  • Immersion isn\'t a dirty word.  
  • Collectively, players are smarter than you and will think of things you never considered.
