This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

All the more reason to go with HEROES of OLYMPUS from TFG.

I have that and it's really more a boardgame than anything else.  Some nice mechanics, but I'm not sure it's useful as a general rule set.

It also doesn't matter what Bilharzia's definition of sword & sandal is.  It matters what ArtemisAlpha's definition is.
D&D is becoming Self-Referential.  It is no longer Setting Referential, where it takes references outside of itself. It is becoming like Ouroboros in its self-gleaning for tropes, no longer attached, let alone needing outside context.

Damn! Zeus says I don't matter! I'll never be able to go on adventures with my crew...
From what I can see of HoO, it looks like one of those tragic 80s boardgame/rpg mashup. I don't share this OCD/OSR obsessional nostalgia for anything that was written before 1990/1980/1975.

That's right, a game you know nothing about and others must like it because of obsessional nostalgia, not because they actually own and play it. Didn't know you were looking for the usual "Fate works for this" answers instead of an actual system that works for what you want without having to write your own game out of it.

Quote from: Spinachcat;900048BTW, isn't there some OSR retro-whatever of RQ that streamlines / simplifies the crunch?
Maybe you're thinking of Classic Fantasy?

Quote from: Bilharzia;900043I think that's unfair to RQ6, the 5 magic systems? passions? crafting and extended Tasks?, cults, brotherhoods? These aren't pass/fail low detail.
I agree... but I suspect daniel_ream is favoring something more along the lines of the 'fail forward' motif.

I was going to suggest this. It may be worth noting that it requires a copy of the Barbarians of Lemuria rules.

Well if you don't say anything about what looks like an obscure boardgame from 1981, I'm going on appearances.  Fate?

I think Classic Fantasy is the modification to RQ which does turn it into a more action-heroic constant combat rpg that Ream is describing, very much in a D&D-like vein. It does not really simplify the crunch at all, it adds to it by providing minis rules and buckets of spells from D&D. Which is great if that's the way you want your RQ, for one thing it makes all those D&D modules usable in RQCF with a bit of conversion.

I still like to know what these well-known hacks are for RQ6 ?

The usual suggestions over on TDM's forum are more Luck Points, hacking Mysticism to provide more heroic-level skills, and importing Legendary Abilities from MRQ.

I'd add another voice to the RQ/Legend/Mythras crowd - It is perfectly suited to a sword and sandal campaign.

Yes, combat is brutal but you can alleviate it by allowing PCs with major wounds to survive for a little while until someone can heal them/apply first aid. Allowing some magical healing through salves and so on might help a bit as well.

Oh ok, but Luck Points and Group Luck Points are just part of RQ6 rules, I get that some grogs don't like them but this can go on forever until you get back to RQ2. I don't think Mysticism needs any hacking since it's entirely part of the base rules and if you want Wuxia type PCs, that's what it's made for, not as a fix to make RQ6 more playable. Mysticism starts to move PCs towards super-human but that's why it's one of the magic systems. If you want to go in that direction there's Luther Arkwright which really moves RQ6 into Super Hero territory, with super Traits and Psionics. I think these are only "hacks" if you see exclusively see RQ6 as a realistic bronze age simulator, it certainly isn't anymore and I don't think RQ ever was since RQ2 was saturated with Gloranthan magic. One of the things RQ6 has done is move RuneQuest away from such a narrow focus and make it more of a toolkit.

Other than one or two mentions, I don't know of any discussion on the TDM forum about Legendary (Heroic?) Abilities? I'm pretty sure that's something that was permanently dumped by TDM since it was part of MRQ1, and no one seems interested in them now.

You're arguing a point I'm not making, so I'm done now.

Omega

And another one totally forgot about.

Tunnels and Trolls. They actually had a solo called Labyrinth which was an ancient Greek setup.

DavetheLost

I wrote a Swords&Sandals Mythic Greece supplement and massive solo for T&T 7.5 edition. It remains unpublished, and with the advent of deluxe T&T its future has become uncertain.

RPGPundit

I would definitely suggest you go with Mazes & Minotaurs; unless you want something higher in power level and not D&D-based. Then I'd advise Lords of Olympus, of course.
