This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: GIMME SOME SUGAR;1091871As a Swedish tabletop gamer I'm a bit worried about how the new Swedish version of Chock (Chill) and the Swedish rendering of Call of Cthulhu will be like since some of those holier-than-thou people from the Swedish forum have become a part of the production team.

Wha?! CoC in swedish with that
crew involved? Clutch those Elder Signs hard because we're in for observing some true IRL existential horrors at work. And not of the entertaining kind.

Well, as far as I know there's only one of those people involved as of now, but only time will tell. I hope I don't choke on my coffee when I read the credits.

It's still the best thing that came out of the Eurovision contests! :p

Not Lordi?

Lordi were from Finland. We hate Finland here in Sweden. Jk. Only when it comes to hockey. I'm half-finnish myself (on my late mother's side). But I identify as 100% Swedish. Sometimes I identify as 100% sloth, cave troll or great white though but I'm species-fluid like that. My psychiatrist tells me it's "A-ok".

I was responding to the part about the best thing that came out of the Eurovision contests. Everything from Eurovision is shit, but Lordi were relatively funny IMHO.

You and SHARK should probably share some PMs.

Yeah, I noticed his avatar at once. I really admire it.:)

off topic: Lordi's fun, but it was made knowing how much of a farce Eurovision is. It's kitsch at that point. :p ABBA is more talented, catchy, and its music has shown cultural longevity. But then Sweden is cursed with catchy music: Roxette, Ace of Base, The Cardigans, Robyn... :D

on topic: Which reminds me that I should run an all Swedish musical playlist whenever I next get to run Kult! ;)

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

How is the traditional RPG scene in Sweden?

Is there a big RPG convention? Has it been overrun by the freaks?

Sweden has always had a big rpg scene and punched above its weight internationally. There have always been a lot of Swedish rpgs (well, since the 80s anyway) and there's been a huge renaissance recently. You may have heard of such games as Mutant: Year Zero, Coriolis, Tales from the Loop, Forbidden Lands, Symbaroum, Kult: Divinity Lost and Vampire 5e. All of them (well Vampire at least partly) Swedish made and released in the last few years. And these are the ones who have been put out by the bigger Swedish game studios and translated. There's a lot of smaller stuff that is in Swedish only so far.

There's a ton interest in the hobby recently. The Swedish Gaming Federation has been going strong since the late 80s and help support young people who want to get into gaming of various types. They, along with organisations such as the Scouts and other youth organisations, get a grant from the government. This money is then distributed down to local youth gaming organisations, which they can then use to rent places to play and store games, throw events or just buy games.

There are several rpg conventions. Sweden is a small country though, so none of them would qualify as big conventions in the US. The largest one is GothCon, which has been running since 1977 in Gothenburg. These days it gets around 2000 attendees every Easter weekend. There's also LinCon, held in Linköping every Ascension day weekend since the mid 80s. There are a bunch of other smaller conventions too, most don't get more than a few hundred attendees at most.

The culture war stuff is not as tied into specific games or game styles in Sweden as in the US. For example at GothCon the OSR corner, which offers drop-in OSR gaming, shares rooms with the Indie-room, which offers drop-in story gaming. This is by choice and no one cares about any story-game vs OSR drama.

That sounds refreshing. Now I just have to learn to speak & read Swedish.
