This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

"Why do you even care what WotC Does?"

What does TBP stand for?
The Big Purple; aka RPG.net with its notably purple color scheme. The only reason I'm not banned there is I stopped going there entirely before they had stopped allowing dissenting voices (and stuck exclusively to game-related topics anyway) and I don't care enough about them to even bother with a flame out post.

These days getting perma-banned from TBP isn't even an accomplishment. You just have to post something true and you'll be gone.

Thanks... and, yeah, it doesn't take much.   I voluntarily stopped going there during the last US election cycle when they effectively preemptively banned conservatives with not one but two banner warnings up top on every page of their forums in addition to the additional 3-4 other ones praising various types of criminality including the ongoing burning, looting, murder, and rioting going on at the time.   It's a shame because it was a good resource for the 20 years that I frequented it (though admittedly I mostly lurked and didn't post much).

I spent forever assuming it meant "The Banning Place", which isn't wrong.

That's me too.  I left both rpg.net and enworld when they turned anti free-speech

And tell you its the same car. Really!

I care for the same reasons as I oppose BGG. These people have influence over the industry and gaming community and are using it to push their own agendas. And not good ones.

I enjoy watching WotC light itself on fire.

The more WotC burns, the more gamers will walk away from the D&D plantation which in the long term is fabulous for the hobby.

But, let's admit our time is better spent developing, playing and reading games we actually like.

But I actually like D&D. :D However that is mostly concentrated to TSR D&D. :)

;) 5e Basic was fine in 2014, but definitely needs curation and pre-planned campaign tier limits to prevent GM burnout.
Just make your fuckin\' guy and roll the dice, you pricks. Focus on what\'s interesting, not what gives you the biggest randomly generated virtual penis.  -- J Arcane

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

Quote from: Katowice on October 13, 2024, 12:02:07 PMPeople care because D&D IS Tabletop Roleplaying to so many people across multiple generations of players. It's such an iconic brand and has the most market share overall, and probably will for a long time.

My daughter plays Dungeons & Dragons in the Dungeons & Dragons Club at her school. Only they don't play Dungeon & Dragons, they play Risus (I think that's what it's called). They just use the term "Dungeons & Dragons" instead of "role-playing game". It's like how we in Texas call all soft drinks "Coke" even though we are most likely ordering a Dr Pepper.

It might be because "role-playing game" is now more heavily associated with video games instead of tabletop games.

Great vid as always! Keep up the good work, Pundit!

About Wizkids Of The Toast, owned by Hasbeens: It's too bad they have access to children through their toys and marketing. The only thing I care about is what the higher ups are doing that forced them to commit brand-suicide. And I, for one, do not believe it's only fiduciary duty to investors (Blackrock, et al.). Something more sinister is at play with these companies, IMHO. Maybe too much pizza, you know? ;)

I do wonder how the folks over at TBP are doing given the week's events.

I think we will see a shift over at WOTC.   I think the window is shifting enough they can feel OK firing people who do doo doo work and focus on making a game that is just a game and not some sort of vanity project of fat purple haired women who think people that look like them can be athletic heroes.

Banjo Destructo

I suppose I care about what WoTC does because I care about the legacy and perception of D&D, and how that will effect my children and the friends they will make as they grow up. The tedium of having to explain esoteric craziness that the average person who might get their kids into D&D literally makes you look crazy because of how crazy WoTC is that its hard to believe without being willing to go into a deep dive.
I care that a bunch of talentless hacks have socialized their ways into positions of influence in the development of D&D and shit all over the men who created D&D, and lie about them in order to make their own game or agenda seem morally superior.
I care that the cultural legacy of D&D is being poisoned by marxists and other demented freaks, and that you can't even mention paul jaquays without revisionists trying to tell you that the literal printed books that say "paul jaquays" should say "jennel jaquays", jennel didn't exist in the 80's, 90's, 00's, and barely existed in the 10's, and now jennel being the "most successful women RPG creator" is definitely taking away credit from a real woman who deserves that title because he just happened to be a very successful person who went crazy in his 50's.

Those people are digging really deep, into the "fantasy" genre.  Stuff that doesn't even make sense in fantasies.
