This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Strange reasons why you wouldn't buy RPGs

What are some the weirdest reasons someone has given you for not buying or playing a certain game.

I had a guy @ Gencon tell me:

"I don't like Clayton Bunce and he did the maps in that book so I won't buy it"

This is after he had told me how much he liked the book, but nope, he hates Clayton Bunce. I guess I have never cared much about the cartographers in RPGs enough influence whether I buy something or not.

whats yours?

Cover art or art in general is a common item that I hear.  I notice the art but it's not a big consideration to me unless it's incredible.

I see bunches of hate that is directed at games that appear to compete with a person's cherished game.  It's like a "Go Team!" mentality.

off topic but related.  In late elementary, Iron Man was my favorite super hero.  I knew a guy who refused to read Iron Man because the way he held his hands when firing repulsar beams "looked gay."

Gamers' obsessions with things like art and bindings constantly astonish me.

I won't play the French fantasy game Prophecy because it's quasi-fascistic but then I'm seemingly the only person who identifies it as having such horrid politics.

Late elementary school?

Man, maybe it's a difference of age or geographic location, but that was totally a valid reason to not like a superhero in Grade 6.
Heroism is no more than a chapter in a tale of submission.
"There is a general risk that those who flock together, on the Internet or elsewhere, will end up both confident and wrong [..]. They may even think of their fellow citizens as opponents or adversaries in some kind of 'war'." - Cass R. Sunstein
The internet recognizes only five forms of self-expression: bragging, talking shit, ass kissing, bullshitting, and moaning about how pathetic you are. Combine one with your favorite hobby and get out there!

It was valid at the time but it seems silly now.  Plus, he was dissing my favorite comic.  Besides, "gay" hands are bent palm down, not palm up.

I refused to buy Werewolf 2E because it turned into an oversized comic book. I also refuse to spend any more money on endless editions (I have 1E and got Wild West because it was less than cheap).

Essentially the classes are more like guildes or castes and each class falls under the control of one particular dragon (the dragons run the world and are worshipped as gods).

In order to advance up the levels, you don't need to just have experience, you need to prove your loyalty to the dragons.

No loyalty for dragons = No advancement.

The only way to learn a profession is through the classes and you can't mix and match your skills so as to play something that doesn't clearly fit into one of the classes.

Most gamers seemingly go "Dragons... cool" but being of a contrarian temperament and of the opinion that even if God did exist, I STILL wouldn't do what he told me to, I feel that this attempt to put ideas such as class and level into a real social context results in little more than the rules being politicised.

I thought fascism was "a political philosophy, movement, or regime that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition"

You know, like Iran or Venezuela.

Mr. Analytical

Yeah, the Dragons acted as fascist dictators.  They had (in-party) inquisitions and anyone discovered to harbour humanist sympathies was executed.

I hope you're joking about that last example... you do know that, shithead though Hugo Chavez may be, he is the democratically elected leader of his country in free and fair (according to human rights groups including Jimmy Carter's organization) elections?

Or did you not know that? I suppose it  might be easy for americans to be confused into thinking that Chavez is a dictator, since Dubya likes to pretend he is, and obviously no one freely and fairly democratically elected could be an enemy of america, right?

FP had a fascinating article about Chavez's brand of democracy.  If I can dig it up, I'll post an outline later tonight.

Yo guy, I used to feel the exact same way, but played a game of it at a con and had an extremely good time.

Now the only things I have against gurps are steve jackson, andy hackard and the forums.

Personally I'd never buy another game that came from a company based in texas.
RPGPundit is a fucking fascist asshole and a hypocritial megadouche.
