Hey, SineNomine - Is there a publishing license for SWN?

Not yet, no, though anyone is welcome to gin up whatever they like for non-commercial distribution. I'd like to get an SRD put together eventually; right now I'm having fun supporting the game myself, but I can't really keep more than one game line going at a time. When I finally decide to turn my attention to something different, I'll need to open SWN up if I want to have it supported by new releases.

I will wait on baited breath. And buy stuff until I can make stuff. :-D

Did the print-on-demand version get pulled?  I finally decided I needed a printed version, but can't find it.  I know there's the Mongoose version, but I love the cover on the original and can't stand the cover on the Mongoose version.  And yeah, I know the Mongoose version has additional content.  I'd still rather have one with the original cover.  (Silly, I know, but it makes a difference to me.)

Strange. Apparently it got pulled.

Philotomy Jurament

Crap, that's what I was afraid of. Bummer.

I'd guess once SineNomine started working with Mongoose, he had to stop offering his own version... if I were Mongoose I wouldn't want to compete with the author of the book I'm distributing (again).

In truth, I voluntarily pulled the old print copies. Mongoose was fine with me continuing to offer them if I so wished, but it seemed dirty pool to be selling a cheaper print copy than they were- particularly when they were shouldering the FLGS marketing and distribution. In addition, I didn't want casual purchasers to see the game, google the best price, and end up buying a version that was 40+ pages shorter than the one they thought they were buying. I know some people were really keen on the old covers, though, so in small recompense I put up some high-quality print files sized for covers at http://www.sinenomine-pub.com/?p=147

Well cool. Very nice of ya all around :) I'm glad I have the older version, even though the extra material sounds pretty good. I just hate the thought of paying that much for just the extra stuff (although Mongoose already has a bunch of my money for Trav and RQII :D ). LOVE the latest mandate archive you've put out, can't believe you put it out for free, it's quality stuff. Despite not really needing it, I'd love to give a try at making deck plans for a Bruxelles. Any particular style you think of in relation to the Bruxelles? I have bought everything of yours so far though, any news on what's coming next from you for SwN? Or Red Tide for that matter, the print copy of that is top notch as well.

That's too bad because the RPGNow version has great, great production values - sturdy binding and all.

I'm so glad I got my print copy when I did. :)

Once in a while it's good to be an early adopter. Not every time though...

Sorry for you, mate.

I think Kevin should seriously reconsider the whole question of the availability of the original print. I don't think the two versions of the game actually compete with each other. They cover more ground by appealing to different audiences within the hobby.

So, think again, Sine Nomine!

The general zeitgeist for Terran Mandate starship stuff is something akin to "TOS Star Trek crewed by a mix of EU and Chinese bureaucrats". Lots of clean, rational design, a heavy technocratic the-state-knows-best angle, and a purpose that is simultaneously intended to do horrible things to targets and then condemn them for not appreciating the necessity of the favor bestowed upon them. The late-era Terran Mandate was a very, very screwed-up place, and the Maestro-class AIs were barely able to contain the sheer boiling psychosis of the ruling bureaucracy on Earth. The constant export of malcontents and troublemakers from Earth to the frontier worlds allowed the ruling class to gradually refine itself to a degree of sheer bastardliness that would've resulted in inevitable collapse if they weren't constantly shipping out everyone who might possibly form a nucleus for discontent. The AI Maestros kept the crazy on a leash most of the time, but every so often something ugly bled through the bureaucracy's shell.

As for what's coming next, the next SWN product up is Darkness Visible, which is intended to be for espionage campaigns what Skyward Steel is for naval jobs. The main trick I'm trying to accomplish with Darkness Visible is to more effectively support espionage-type adventures, where intrigue and obfuscation tend to make them a lot harder to brew up than conventional exploration and problem-solving adventures. There's nothing immediately at hand for Red Tide, though I may be publishing a Labyrinth Lord-compatible domain system tied into RT's fluff. I'm considering it as a version 1.0 of what will eventually go into Other Dust, the post-apoc SWN standalone that will cover Terra 200 years after the Scream.

It's tempting, to be sure, but it doesn't seem entirely fair to Mongoose, with what they're doing in getting MongSWN into gaming stores and otherwise pushing it to the bricks-and-mortar crowd. And I really, really don't want to have to deal with conversations with peeved buyers who thought they were getting a big discount buying the DTRPG hardbound only to discover it's missing 40 pages out of the Mongoose version... and it's Murphy's certainty that I'd run into that a week after I pulled the trigger.
