This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

STAR WARS RPGs before 1987

So, how many of you rickety old walker-pushin' old gaming geezers played Star Wars games before WEG's official rules came along?

Come on, I know you did it.  Spill it, you old coots.  Put down the oxygen mask and answer me!

Never actually played a homebrew Star Wars game but I did try to jury-rig Star Frontiers to do so.  Sadly I wasn't quite as imaginative and creative as I should have been and gave up after I'd decided Electric and Sonic swords just weren't good substitutes for lightsabers.

Didn't play Star Wars but the AD&D game I played in 1983-84 had a Jedi in it for a while. Not really sure what the rules were for the character, let alone how it was fit into the campaign (it was really pretty chaotic hack & slash, and actually unpleasant to recall). I remember there being at least one semi-angsty moment with the DM tempting the Jedi with the Dark Side--again, not sure if there were any rules to handle that, or even if either of them seriously entertained the possibility of the character "turning".

Does it count if we made up Force rules for Star Frontiers?

Yeah, kind of, JB.  Can I call you JB?

I simply can't conceive that gamers of the era didn't try their own SW conversions for other games.  It HAS to have happened.

I made up lightsaber stats for Traveller about '82, but decided it wasn't a good fit for the setting.

I think I've still got a drawing somewhere of a character in a Luke Skywalker judo-outfit, waving a lightsaber attached to a powerpack.

We always assumed that "saber" actually meant "lightsaber", because otherwise it was just too lame. You know, you finish twenty years' service, Bob gets a spaceship, and Jim gets a sword.

I have a vague memory of someone saying, "is it at least a lightsaber?" and the GM saying, "uh... yeah." But that could be one of those retroactive memories, where you make something up to make sense of the crazy shit that happened.

I was going to ask that.

We played a lot of Star Frontiers but, essentially, we never really played Star Frontiers. We were playing Star Wars all along :p

The only real mental image I have from that Star Frontiers game is some kind of dog-like alien guy in a suit next to a spaced-up Elmore chick - you know, typical Elmore, big boobs, bigger hair. I think they were coming out of the back of a spaceship, looked a bit like Stargate Atlantis' "Puddle Jumper".

Does anyone have a copy of the book? I lost it along with all my other old books in '99, so I might be imagining...

No way! You couldn't even get an energy weapon without going to a hi-tech planet, and they were all bloody great things you needed to hike around like a Sten gun.

"You get a sabre."
"A lightsabre?"
"No, a metal blade with a basket handle. Suffer!"

I played a heavily ripped off version of Star Wars using Star Frontiers. (The themes were stolen, Jedi/Psionics were hacked on) but there were elements of other SF rips as well.

Despite looking like Star Trek with the seemingly Vulcan race, Star Ace actually did well for Star Wars. It really has the same feel and a setting with a rebellion against the Empire.

(Nowadays I'd use either d6 or HardNova 2 though ;) )
