Degenisis is being published in english sometime this year by fanpro. IIRC, the origional was in german.

Because most RPG companies are English-language-based far as I know.

Wouldn't surprise me if most translations were like that of Engel: Feder und Schwert get part of their income translating White Wolf books into German. They release Engel in German. Some bilingual fans in English-speaking countries get interested. Someone translates it into into English and some hack butchers the rules into a mediocre d20 game. It stagnates on store shelves and the rest of the line is cancelled.

I played original Engel with a bilingual GM and the tarot-card system. It was fun. Then I saw d20 Engel with its brand of "kewl powerz" burning HP...which didn't really fit the setting. I love d20, but wasn't sure d20 Engel would work. It certainly didn't work the way they did it!

Hire good translators
Localize
Re-layout
and License

the existing game in another language as it does to completely write a new game from scratch through traditional means (ie hiring all your writers, artists, etc).

It'd be extremely cool (for all of you non-spanish speakers, I mean) if the new Alatriste movie led to the translation and publication of an english version of the Capitan Alatriste RPG. Its a truely awesome historical swashbuckling RPG.

Well, there's the fact that there are already a lot of games in the English-language market. This means that any foreign RPGs have to be able compete with the established RPGs, or be able to carve their own niche - and that requires being unique and at the same time appealing to English-speakers. To put an example Te Deum Pour Un Massacre sounds undeniably cool, but you've got to wonder how many people would get a game about the French Wars of Religion in the XVI Century.

Then, as Andy K noted, you have to license it (which costs money), have somebody who knows the language and can do a decent translation (because hiring professional translators is out of the question) and deal with the approval proccess (which may be easy or not, depending on the licenser). When you think that the truly gorgeous games (the hardcover full colour ones) would involve a greater expenditure, it gets even worse.

It would be extremely cool, but I suspect it's also unlikely to happen.

The game would have to be approved by the author of the Alatriste novels  - and apparently it's hard enough getting Spanish sourcebooks approved, so I can only guess that approval for an English version would be much, much harder.

That and translating the 17th Century slang would be a pain in the ass.
