Title: Spirit of the Century
Post by: Samarkand on September 08, 2006, 12:28:42 PM
I've probably mentioned my interest in the Evil Hat game "Spirit of the Century".  They just finished the PDF copy of the game.  It's available for those who pre-order the soft- or hardcover that will be printed in early November; a pre-order gets you access to the PDF via access code.

I haven't had a chance to review the full PDF.  A family trip over the weekend is keeping me away from my home computer.  But I have been following the discussions about the game and read a preview.  It seems intruiging.  Spirit of the Century is a pulp action game powered by the FUDGE-derived Fate system.
The authors have heavily revised the Fate system and put in a lot of new stuff.  In particular, Aspect use (the descriptors used as character traits) and how they are related to fate points have been reworked.  They also have     reworked such things as wound damage to be temporary aspects--Consequences--that can be "invoked" or "compelled" in the same way the more permanent Aspects can be.  While it doesn't included classes, it does guide character generation by explaining certain stock genre characters and providing quick-play skill-and-stunt (feat) packages.

The background setting is akin to that of White Wolf's Adventure! rpg--the characters are recruited by the Centurion Club (a sort of pulp League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) whose elder members are dying out.  The villains are rather flavourful--especially Gorilla Khan, a sentient gorilla whose iron paw rules a vast African empire.  The writing style is very enthusiastic about the setting and genre, providing inspiration to play a pulp campaign without insisting this will whiten your teeth/feed the children/etc.

If anyone here wants to check it out, the URL for the PDF preview is:
