So WoTC has cancelled minis

There has been no formal announcement of these having been cancelled.

Miniature Market and Paizo just started soliciting pre-orders for "Streets of Shadow", so apparently, "some guy you know" gets to find out before major distributors such as Alliance.

Uhm. Isn't Streets of Shadow a set of Dungeon tiles? Is there a miniatures set associated with it? I don't keep up with the miniatures that well, I admit.
Download Secret Santicore! (10MB). I painted the cover :)

An apparent "insider" has declared that the minis line isn't over, and that WotC will announce their plans with the minis at D&D Experience (DDX).
See this thread. The relevant posts are,

QuoteI have some inside info, but can't say more until after D&D XP.

The misinformation [ed. referring to other posters] was just general stuff about DDM being over, etc. The game isn't over so long as people play it.

Life HAS been crazy for me lately. *sigh*

Looking forward to having more free time.

Dave

QuoteI don't have much inside information, and certainly no inside information about product. Everything I know (which isn't much) is only about DDM, and all of that is tentative. Like I said, we'll hear something at [D&D]XP.

Dave

Btw, I never realized just how much hatred DDMers have towards 4E. They blame 4E for killing their favourite game, when I thought they saw 4E as the saviour of the DDM line. E.g. here (different poster),

QuoteWOTC did indeed blow out a bunch of product. I wish I had gotten to it sooner and got more. I had never put Legendary Evils singles up for sales as even the crappy commons would have had to sell way to high to recoup the cost.
So, I don't know what WOTC should do. Their move to this half-baked partially visible enviro-killing non-skirmish half-collectible unsupported and unloved product has killed it for me personally. It should go the way of the do-do and fade away. Yes I said that.
If Heroscape can revive/reinvent the skirmish game, maybe that is a good thing. Maybe 5e will go to using hexes in it's combat system and it will all work well together.

What the guy told Marion was correct. The conclusion that WotC has canceled the line entirely is incorrect.

I am actually not sure that's what Marion meant to say, now that I think about it.

That's what the thread title suggests, but my opening post was more nuanced. Besides, if people have been following the thread, they'll notice that no one has claimed that D&D minis were gone forever.

What I've gathered from the insider comments reposted in this thread is that WoTC have plans for minis, that those plans aren't definitive yet and that in the meantime D&D players can still buy Heroscape minis. This very much sounds like WoTC has adopted a wait and see strategy.

True. The most dramatic claim in the thread was that Hasbro was planning to do away with roleplaying games forever as soon as it found a way to leverage the D&D IP some other way.

I wouldn't say Hasbro is planning to dump roleplaying games, but the day that Hasbro has to choose between the D&D roleplaying game and some other D&D product that is successful independantly of the RPG line, I do believe that it is the RPG line that will suffer.

Incidentally, and completely off topic, have you read John Wyndham's "The Chrysalids"?

It's only "The Chrysalids" on everybody else's side of the pond.  In the US, it bears it's correct name, "Re-Birth".  :p

David Johansen

Nah, here in Canada (on this side of the pond...) it's the Chrysalids too.

Plans for future minis are going to be announced at DDXP.

At this point, what I expect is either a) a complete redesign of the product line, b) the return of the D&D miniatures game + complete redesign of the product line or c) Heroscape minis will officially pull double duty from now on.
