The Butcher

Right now I have a two-week holiday coming up (anyone knows any good game stores in Italy?) which means a hiatus on my current games.

Running

  • The Day After Ragnarok (Savage Worlds) is still going strong, despite my abandonment of the Obsidian Portal site (turns out I can't be arsed to regularly update a game log. Who knew?), and a mild case of system burn-out (I've been running mostly SW for 3 years now, it's been fun, but I want to run something grittier.

Playing

  • The D&D 4e game is getting ported over to Rolemaster, a system I've never played but which holds no appeal to me; I'll give it a try, but I'm not terribly excited about it (to say the least).

  • We've had one session each of the WFRP 2e and Rogue Trader. One GM is a notorious quitter, and the other is a time-pressed grad student, so I'm not sure we'll get to play much more of either, which is a pity (I'd like to see both games continue).

  • The venerable Castles & Crusades game by Bland Joe Dwarf is also going strong, and nearing a conclusion of sorts (or so I'm told).

  • The CoC mini-campaign ended with us failing to prevent the rise of Cthulhu and the world going to the crapper, which I'm OK with actually, but in the end it kind of hinged on a bullshit GM fiat of sorts. The GM is actually a great guy, he spent a lot of time and effort on game prep (props, music, research etc.)  but he gets too caught up on the whole "I'm telling a story" 90s BS sometimes, and occasionally goes into "immersion Nazi" mode (I posted about this a while back).

Planning to Run

There's so much I want to run it isn't even funny.

  • Right now, #1 is The Great D&D Campaign. It's been 12 years since I've DMed. The time has come for me to return to the place where it all started. I want this to be a long-lasting campaign, and to challenge my players' AD&D 2e-fed notions of "what is D&D". To show them the beauty and the madness of gonzo old school D&D. I'm still figuring out which system to use (I'd love to see the complete DCC RPG before committing), and considering whether I want to have a megadungeon as a "campaign tent pole", or a more sedate wilderness sandbox dotted with smaller "lair"-type dungeons.

  • #2 is a (new) World of Darkness game. I've played in a few but I've wanted to run one, badly, for some time now. While Hunter and Werewolf are the top contenders, Vampire, Mage and Changeling would all make me happy.

  • #3 is Mongoose Runequest II, which still screams "play me!" everytime I lay eyes on the book. Akrasia's reports of Loz's Elric game whetted my appetite for Young Kingdoms adventure, but I'm still enamored of the idea of a Vikings campaign (or, more broadly, a "fairy tale Dark Ages Europe" campaign) or my own homebrewed mythic sword-and-sandal setting.

  • #4 is... everything else, really. Traveller, Eclipse Phase, Call of Cthulhu, Rifts, Ninjas & Superspies, SUPERS! to name but a few.

Planning to Play

  • The guy running C&C (Bland Joe Dwarf in these very forums), is running a Game of Thrones (the GoO d20 version, not Green Ronin's SoIaF RPG) game, and mentioned he wants to run a BASH UE "space-opera supers" game, as well as an AD&D 1e "let's be bad guys" game. I'm not sure I'll get to play the GoT one, but I've even thought up a character for the BASH UE one.

hmmm, which version?  RM2 is a bit lighter but RM isn't a light game and personally it only shines in all its baroque glory with full on RMSS.  Oh well, if the character sheet's around ten pages you're playing the good version.

Anyhow, it depends a lot on the GM and their technique.  RM requires an organized GM who has developed a play style that suits the game.  If they're new to it I can pass on tips.  Give it a chance, it's a game that comes together very nicely once the group gets a handle on it.  Not that it's really a difficult game but D&D tactics are often rewarded with maiming, bleeding, and trying to shove your guts back in.  See that weedy little Kobold?  He can luck out and kill that demigod over there.  Oh it's long odds to be sure but never ever ever assume the other guy can't hurt you.

I'm recruiting players for a Legends of Anglerre game. I've found one guy who's interested so far. Searching for more and crossing fingers.

Nightfall

Starting to run TWO groups (alternating Sundays for each group. I still run each and every Sunday) Carrion Crown.

Group A: A half Orc Magus (with the Blackblade Archetype), a dwarven gunslinger, an assimar oracle of Flame with a few Life mysteries, a human ranger/inquisitor of Pharasma and now a kobold draconic wild-blooded (Linnorm) sorcerer.

Group B: A dhampir Bard with the Archeologist archetype, a human fighter with the Unbreakable archetype, (also likes to drink); a dhampir Rogue of some kind, two players that haven't picked out ANYTHING yet, and a ranger with the Natural Weapon Fighting style (probably Shapeshifter archetype but not 100% sure.)

So far the Human ranger/inquisitor will not be joining us initially. The Bard and the Kobold are both the same player but because I have two groups, I didn't want him playing the same character.  The ranger with the Natural Weapon fighting style and the dhampir rogue will probably only join off and on. We'll see.

Otherwise I'm looking forward to having a GREAT deal of fun with this.

Or at least more fun than some things.

I'm also in a Jade Regent Adventure Path (which I actually HAVEN'T read) which alternates every Wednesday (except this month when we space it out for DM reasons) with Pathfinder Society. (I still need to figure out what to play. My Enchanter is dead...so I need a new character...)

Doing a great deal of prep and writing for the old WEG d6 Star Wars. I'm looking back at a lot of the movies/TV from the time when the original trilogy came out and have learned that a lot of the same production and model crew worked also on Buck Rogers, Battlestar Galactica, Space Academy, Jason of Star Command, and Battle Beyond the Stars (which was also one of James Cameron's and Gale Ann Hurd's first movies). So I have been collecting these on DVDs and watching them and then converting items from them to the d6 Star Wars system.

I'll append a couple of ship files I've done as PDFs.

Form the group wisely, make sure you share goals and means.
Set norms of table etiquette early on.
Encourage attentive participation and speed of play so the game will stay vibrant!
Allow that the group, milieu and system will from an organic symbiosis.
Most importantly, have fun exploring the possibilities!

Running: AD&D 2nd. ed.

As for this, I can\'t comment one way or the other on the correctness of the factual assertions made, but it makes for chilling reading:-

PLAYING
* a surprising amount of Heroclix lately
* old-WoD Vampire LARP (One World By Night).  Just got back from a four-day event game, lots of crazy shit going on there.  Sparking some "dealing with a big LARP org" issues which might spur a post on Other Games later this week.

PREPPING
* to run a BECMI campaign online, possibly with multiple groups depending on how this all shakes out (once it's running, I'll definitely do a thread for it -- especially if I'm juggling multiple groups)

WRITING/DESIGNING
* the various irons in the fire are all cold at the moment.  This is normal with the ebb and flow of Real Life.  Should spike back up as winter approaches and there's less outdoor time with my son.

READING
* just finished Larry Niven's 'Protector', which I grabbed at Borders closeout since I really enjoyed 'Ringworld' when I read it earlier in the year.

WASTING A LOT OF TIME ON
* playing with, and getting accustomed to, my first "smartphone".

WONDERING
* if I can fix the damn shower without having to call maintenance.

FALLING IN LOVE WITH
* 'feta and roasted red pepper' dip from Target.  Holy crap is it fantastic.

Running: "Into a Crypt of Drugula," an adventure I wrote for LotFP based on an Electric Wizard song.

Considering: Some sort of Ravenloft game over Google+ using LotFP.

Reading: Castles & Crusades core book.

Quote from: One Horse Town;477089I'd be interested in your thoughts on it. I wrote Heralds of a New Dawn.

Thousand Thrones is a great campaign so far.

I have had to alter some of it to suit our game and provide a greater ramp up of drama in the second half. I wanted to give the campaign scope and see the PCs grow beyond their lowly origins by really starting to take matters into their own hands more.

Chapter 6 was one that probably got the most drastically altered as a result. I found it difficult to imagine that my PCs would return to the Crusade with the Child after all they had been through and resume the same sort of shenanigans as in Chapter 4. The first half was replaced by material from Thousand Thrones Expansion 2 regard Lord Detrois (Vale of the Necrarch). On saying that, we did get the Passion Play in from Chapter 6 under a slightly different context and it was wonderful :)

Chapter 7 also has been altered but I have tied the events in more closely to the story to convery it from being a red herring to an important step for the PCs to become the masters of their own destiny (something admittedly that a prewritten campaign would struggle to encompass). Ahmed is no longer in the chapter. The PCs are allying with the Priory and Lydia holds the secrets of the power words. This is going to culminate with Lure of the Lich Lord which sees Kartamen being replaced by Kadon. This should arm the PCs with knowledge and power to choose to go to Kislev with the Child and defeat the Black Witch.
