This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

So, how much do you spend on RPGs, what convinces you to spend money?

What actually gets you lighten the purse?

How much do you wind up spending per year?

as for me, I'm the "hey DM, can I see that book?" guy :p
Though I have bought warhammer minis for D&D

If I take a look at it and like what I see, and can reasonably afford it, I spend money on it.

I knew there was reason I liked you beyond being in the military.  It's like Pundit both of you have no clue why I like you.  It's all about "feel" but guys never get it. (yes I follow your posts sue me).

Actually, the "feel" of the product should be the only reason why you buy something. I'm not a collector, although I have a collection of RPG stuff. Except it is eclectic.

I do not like 4E, however that has not stopped me from buying the two Dark Sun books for 4E and a pretty bitchin' Orcus miniature (except it is the size of a chihuahua, so not very miniature).

I bought two books from a d20 OGL company that is no longer in business solely because they are so poorly written that they are actually repugnant. I keep them as a reminder that as long as my stuff does not stink as bad as those turds, I'm doing OK.

My actual collection was 4x of Ben's collection spread over multiple game systems.  I actually prefer horror games but I do Dnd because my group prefers it. Currently I have less than 20 books spread in multiple systems.  I was dead serious about losing my books.

None of the above. As a class of products.

I occasionally will read stuff on a new edition and pick it up. Sometimes I buy an adventure. There aren't (to my knowledge) any magazines that cater to my interest, and I've no interest in subscriptions of other kinds to gaming materials (DDI, for example.)

So for the most part. None of the above.

Quote from: Marleycat;561822Cheap bastard!  Welcome to RPGsite VP!

Thank you.

And speaking of cheap, the option for "miniatures" up there brings up an issue that always baffles me. I'll never understand why I'm the only GM I know who uses dirt cheap plastic pawns as miniatures for his games. I mean, think of the advantages! They're much more portable, color coded for instant recognition, easily replaced, and you can imagine them as anything you want without having to pretend a dire rat is a were-antelope.

Oh no, you aren't the only one. I use chess pieces, tokens, coins or whatever I can because I have no money for actual minatures.

I spend maybe a couple hundred a year, if that, and I make the choice based on comparison to other forms of group entertainment.  For instance, five of us going out to a movie once is about $45, so any game that gets us three hours of good, solid entertainment for less than that is an easy sell.  We're not into prep-as-play, though, so it has to be easy and quick to learn and play.

If I'm just buying an RPG to read, I have to compare the price to inexpensive paperback fiction, so $5-8 for a few hours reading enjoyment.

For both of these reasons, I've been buying boardgames and indie miniatures wargames more than anything else for the last couple of years.
D&D is becoming Self-Referential.  It is no longer Setting Referential, where it takes references outside of itself. It is becoming like Ouroboros in its self-gleaning for tropes, no longer attached, let alone needing outside context.

Two years ago I was buying a lot of settings. Last year it was core rule books. This year, it's OSR stuff and Unisystem. Throughout, any RuneQuest or Ubiquity stuff is grabbed immediately. How much? Maybe a couple of new books a month plus any olde stuff I can get cheap cheap.

What convinces me? Typically if I have other good books by the same author, it's an easy sell. An occasional whim purchase if I'm in the mood (picked up the Buffy/Angel stuff after rewatching the series on DVD).

I'm less a collector and more of a librarian, in the Umberto Eco sense of the word.

Used books, because I'm cheap. Definitely used books. Also it helps me complete collections I've been meaning to round out.

Depends on the year. There's been long dry spells, like 2002~2010. I missed out on most of the d20 boom deliberately. I hated D&D 3e and the collapse of my regular group led to a long dry spell. I came back in 2010 with curiosity in D&D 4e and found I disliked 4e just as much. Checked around on the new edition of some of my favorite games and realized I didn't like them either (not all that sold on new 3e or 4e L5R, for example).

And ever since then I've decided I'm just old skool and not interested in any of the new stuff out there. So i've been on a buying spree (for me) of all the old stuff I wished I bought before. Same sorta goes for video games, as none of the new stuff really interests me. Outside of splurging on VTES cards before they became a scarce commodity, I pretty much don't buy anything current, except PDFs.

Pretty much I've discovered, "If it's not old enough to be in high school by now, I'm probably not interested." However, I will say the OSR movement does grab me something serious -- I guess you can say it falls within the above parameters, at least in spirit.

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

Spike

I've got more game books than I can use, but aside from this year, where I've only added a few mongoose books and some Dark Heresy/Rogue Trader books that came out (and, um, at least one Deathwatch... I think), I've been good.

I mean cheap. Yeah.

If it ain't heavy on rules and/or setting I won't touch it though. I got no use for prepackaged adventures. I think Rifts and Traveller have the right of it: Toss me a starting point and let me ROLL!

Oh. Yeah, ballparking.  A grand a year, mebbee more. Not counting wargame stuff, which I've more or less given up on.... or maybe I've got more stuff than I can actually paint and lug around... I'm not sure which.
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.

I was tempted to put down "none of the above", were it an option.
I only tend to buy new core rulebooks, as I explore new systems.
The survey does not accommodate this.

None of the above?

I like reading designers thoughts about their games; they can do a good job of selling me, as long as they can explain their game without having to put down another game (Quickest way to put me off your game. I hate negative advertising. I don't want to know why you think their product is bad, I want to know why you think yours is good). And I'll buy any game with my name in it (I wasn't terribly upset about our group being missed off the T1R playtesters list, because I don't want to own it. Because it's shit. Designer is a nice chap, though).

If I'm playing in it, I'll try and buy it. I've ended up with two editions of Pendragon because, both times, the GM didn't indicate which edition they were running.

And sometimes I'll just pick something off the shelf because it looks neat, which sometimes works (Unknown Armies!) and sometimes fails (Remember Tommorrow).
