This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

So, how much do you spend on RPGs, what convinces you to spend money?

New Editions, Splatbooks, Adventure books, online subscriptions, magazines, miniatures, cards, etc.
What actually gets you lighten the purse?

How much do you wind up spending per year?

as for me, I'm the "hey DM, can I see that book?" guy :p
Though I have bought warhammer minis for D&D

I just spent the most money on RPGs I have spent in a long long time.  Well, I pre-paid for the AD&D reprints so I guess I'd say "back in October".  I'm guessing you mean rules and so forth, anyway, not accessories like miniatures and terrain.  Because on that front I buy a new Dwarven Forge set every year or so (been lagging the last few years; some lean Christmases), and those clock in at $130 or so.

What convinces me to spend money is "does this suit my AD&D needs" or "will this work in my AD&D games."  If the answer is yes, I purchase it.  If not, I don't.  On rare occasion, I will buy something that is only tenuously related.  I recently negotiated a trade to get a copy of SPACE MARINE (an old game by FGU, not WH40k related) to see the David Sutherland and Jeff Dee artwork.  Game-wise it's "meh".

Once upon a time I'd drop $50-$60 on an RPG item without batting an eye, now I am far more scrupulous.  I have eliminated the dross from my collection and only have things I know I will either play or derive immediate enjoyment from reading.  I don't keep things for "maybe, someday this might come in handy".  That's hoarding and it's ... well, hoarding.

Now if things are given to me?  That's another matter.  For example, I have a copy of The Hall of Many Panes, Cyborg Commando, a Traveller "Little Black Box", a few d20 games, leftover from running an online store (hilarious disaster, don't even ask), and so on.  But I didn't pay for them, and wouldn't.  Most of them are terrible.

Other than a few $2 pdfs, I haven't bought an rpg product in years.  The last thing I bought was probably a couple WFRP2 books.  There hasn't been much out worth buying imo.

Benoist?  Seriously if he likes something I take a peek. Fuck all of you no life bastards I just learned I might get a new s/o if I call her/him.:)

What? Gamergirls for the win.:D

I buy NOTHING without research that's what my "boys" are for.  By the way where is my "none of the above option"?
Don\'t mess with cats we kill wizards in one blow.;)

I mostly buy adventures, fanzines (Fight On! and Knockspell), and the odd supplement that catches my eye. I don't spend too much on them. Nowadays, I give away more game books than I buy.
Now with a Zine!

I totally need to get into that "give away stuff" network. :D

I spend less than I used to because there is less that I want. Having said that this year is seeing an upsurge due to the many fine retroclones hitting the market. I'd say all up I would spend between $500 and $1000 in any given year.

A "fanzines" option is missing, and, oddly enough, a "new RPG" option as well. Not all rule books are "new editions".
I am not getting tired mentioning this, I would buy (or support via Kickstart) Stone Horizon in a second. Old Horse Town convinced me long ago to part with that money.

Print magazines might not be prominent anymore in the English-speaking world but I do buy the French Casus Belli and Di6dent "magazines" (which are more like half-year digests than true periodicals).
Swords & Wizardry & Manga ... oh my.
(Beware. This is a Kickstarter link.)

Too much, far too much. On books I'll often never use.
This is the loot from 2011, or most of it:

That is why my new years resolution was to not buy stuff I'm not gonna read/use. So far 2012's been better, but places like therpgsite can make it hard, as hype/praise here often makes me check stuff on ebay and from there it's just a click away. That's in general what convinces me to buy stuff.

For example a 1st edition AD&D DMs Guide, The PlaneScape box and a "Campaign Sourcebook and Catacomb Guide"'s been added to the collection this year. Because of you guys.

I don't tend to buy RPGs much lately.
I have all the RPGs I need for some time, such as Rolemaster, Legend, RQ6 (I got that recently in PDF format), Elric, Gammaworld, Pathfinder, Dragon Warriors.

On top of that  I got lots of free RPGs as well for example Eclipse phase, all the material or that is free in PDF format.

I use a tablet to read the PDF format RPGs, So really I spend a lot less than I used to now I have a tablet.

Give me all your unwanted stuff.  My cat and I would take real good care of it. I'm serious. I had to leave or give away 99.9% of my collection away. But now I have my own place. My White Wolf stuff is lonely.

The postage etc to the States would probably eat up more than the books would cost locally.

It's not that I mind giving things away though, especially stuff I know I'm never gonna use. This batch for example went into a big reallocation project at a local convention in April. And yes, it includes the very same Traveller corebook that was on the last picture.

Vegetable Protein

One of the reasons I like this hobby is that it can be relatively cheap compared to others when it comes to dollars-per-hour-of-entertainment, so I try to spend as little as possible. The strange thing is that I'm a big supporter of the idea of an RPG industry, yet I don't feed it. Gets kind of awkward at the local gaming store. :(

Marleycat

PM me there are books in there I want back hon. I can pay postage you just walk me through how to do it.
