So, I'm running an AD&D game at the CT old school mini-con in October. To set the mood, I'm bringing music. I'm only playing METAL! that was popular from the OD&D through the AD&D 1st ed. years. Share with me your favorite music you listened to as a kid back in from those years while playing D&D, so I can create my playlist.
METAL! only! Because basically, if you played D&D while listening to Bananarama, well, you were a loser, and likely still are. :)
Please include Artist/Band and Song Title, rather than just saying "Everything from Sabbath, dude!"
Thx!

Hey Joe,
What was your music playlist during the 1E AD&D era?
Quote from: ggroy;397630Hey Joe,
What was your music playlist during the 1E AD&D era?
I was too broke to afford records, so whatever was on the radio. But lots of Megadeath, Sabbath, Priest, and G&R, AC/DC, and Metallica. As you can prolly tell, my AD&D yrs were 1984-1988.

We usually copied tapes off one another. Typically one person would get a particular tape, and make numerous copies from it. This was spread amongst a group of us, where every person bought some particular original cassettes of several different albums.
Of the D&D groups I played in back in the day, the older players listened to slightly different stuff.
These were typically guys who were five to ten years older than me. The ones into "metal" were listening to stuff like:
- Boston
- UFO
- Led Zeppelin
- Scorpions (older stuff)
- Styx
- Queen
- Pink Floyd
- Black Sabbath
- Deep Purple
- Alice Cooper (older stuff)
- KISS

Give me The Jam or Elvis Costello and the Attractions any day of the week.

I remember lots of Sabbath/ozzy, Judas priest, and motley crue with a sprinkling of Zeppelin and Hendrix. Can't pin down any particular songs.

Listening to it now, man. That's some heavy shit. May not add it to the list unless I want to scare the shit out of the players that a TPK is imminent. Maybe if I play one of J Raggi's modules or his LOTFP game I'll break it out. :)

Well, sort of. I think he was on one of his well documented periods of being "missing". So, whilst he was a member of the band, my bro never got the meet him, let alone play with him. :D
While we're talking about him...
MSG - Cry For the Nations, Into the Arena, Victim of Illusion.
17 replies and no mention of Manowar yet!?!
It's not my kinda music AT ALL, but the cleaning crew the local convention,The Dirtbusters (http://www.rpgforum.dk/images/fastaval/dirtbusters.jpg), listens to a lotta Manowar and I figure it would be spot on for Metal D&D, tracks like Battle Hymn, March for Revenge (By the Soldiers of Death) and Black Wind, Fire and Steel.

No chance! The drummer was a cousin of my brother's friend at the time and they used a family retreat a few miles from here to keep in practise whilst not touring and in the UK. My bro played the drums with them a few times when they were over here and resting. :)
For a long time, I ran Warhammer FRP to Savatage's album Hall of the Mountain King (1987). The whole album (with the possible exception of the first track) works well for dark fantasy role-playing:
The tracks are:

Savatage is best known for this track (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbWWq-Yz0Gg) from their Dead Winter Dead album, which led their alter-ego Trans-Siberian Orchestra (who I've seen in concert several times -- great stuff).

UFO/Michael Schenker - Lights Out
(IMHO, the live versions of "Lights Out" were better).
EDIT: Fifth Angel did a cool heavier cover version of "Lights Out".
Blue Oyster Cult - Godzilla, Black Blade (it's about Elric, for God's sake!)
Quote from: ColonelHardisson;397891Blue Oyster Cult - Godzilla, Black Blade (it's about Elric, for God's sake!)
Heard that Moorcock actually wrote the lyrics to some Blue Oyster Cult songs.
I was more into Blue Oyster Cult's "wimpy" stuff, like "Burning For You" and "Don't Fear the Reaper".
Quote from: ggroy;397892Heard that Moorcock actually wrote the lyrics to some Blue Oyster Cult songs.
He co-wrote a few with Eric Bloom, including "Black Blade." The
sound may not be very "metal" these days, but the lyrics still are.
Quote from: ColonelHardisson;397920The sound may not be very "metal" these days.
This very much changes with the times.
What use to be considered "very
metal" back 20 or 30+ years ago, would probably be considered "classic rock" today.
No idea how one would define "metal" music these days.
I turn on the radio to a local "modern rock" station, where most of the songs sound like "metal" bands with better singing and bettering recording. (At least to my ears).

Sure. There was a time when BOC was considered among the hardest of the hard when it came to rock. Matter of fact, it was one of the first bands I ever heard the term "heavy metal" applied to, way back when I was a kid (30+ years ago). Now, of course, modern metal fans would laugh at the notion of BOC as metal.

Yeah, it's kind of a nebulous term now. I flip around satellite radio, between stations dedicated, respectively, to Classic Rock, Alternative, and Metal, and there is quite a variety of what is and isn't considered metal, and the classification varies depending on who you talk to.

I can relate. When I was a kid, the first "heavy" sounding record I ever heard was KISS' "Destroyer". At the time, I thought it was the heaviest record in the world, such as songs like "King of the Night Time World" and "God of Thunder".
The other stuff on the radio at the time, sounded quite "light" in comparison to Destroyer.

As an example, a few days ago I was listening to the radio in the car, and heard what I thought was a "metal" sounding cover version of the George Michael (WHAM!) song "Careless Whisper". (A heavily distorted guitar played all the saxophone parts correctly).
It turns out the band (Seether) that did the "Careless Whisper" cover, don't seem to consider themselves a "metal" band.

Blue Oyster Cult, all the way. Used to start my last Gamma World game with Sole Survivor and Veteran of the Psychic Wars. When we switched over to Mekton II, it was Godzilla as the theme song.
Of course, there is always the nifty Dragula by Rob Zombie done to Neon Genesis Evangelion.... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqzP-shhaHw)
:)
EDIT: And to think I almost forgot the Lenin UFO Zombie Apocalypse of Metallica's All Nightmare Long.... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S28LDft7cO4)

Kudos to Ggroy for the thrash/grind core/death metal/black metal references, I love most of them. But I think you're moving away from the OP perimeter at the speed of light.
Never managed to use extreme metal bands for RPG background music. As much as I love this shit they're just square pegs in round holes when it comes to background music.

I never really got into black metal that much, other than maybe the first few albums by Mayhem, Emperor, etc ...
I suppose by then, I was getting kinda bored of listening to extreme metal type bands.

Same here. Even back in the day, anything heavier than Metallica was somewhat distracting at many gaming tables I played around.
The only times I ever heard heavier stuff as background music at the gaming table, was when the other players were into that style of music. At one game, the DM was playing stuff like Possessed's "Seven Churches" and Sodom's crappy sounding "Obsessed by Cruelty" records, largely because all the other players were into that thrash/proto-death metal stuff back in the day.
EDIT: This was before Death's "Scream Bloody Gore" was released.

My bad. I read Bathory and for some reason my brain transformed it into Cradle of Filth (probably because of their Cruelty and the Beast album)
Quote from: boulet;398116My bad. I read Bathory and for some reason my brain transformed it into Cradle of Filth (probably because of their Cruelty and the Beast album)
I was really into the first three Bathory records, and the fourth record "Blood Fire Death" to a lesser extent.
I thought the first two Bathory records, "Bathory" and "The Return", sounded more like thrash and/or proto-death metal.
Cradle of Filth sounded good, though I was never really heavily into them. They were one of the many hundreds of bands which flooded the metal cd market during the early/mid-1990's from labels like Century Media, Relapse, Nuclear Blast, etc ... (ie. after Roadrunner dropped most of their death metal bands from their roster).
Along with the standards like Iron Maiden, Dio, etc, I think some of the doom metal bands could be appropriate as well, like Solitude Aeturnus and Candlemass (at least their stuff up to about the mid 90s---not familiar with either of their later material. ).

Candlemass' "Nightfall" record is good.
Slightly thrashier sounding doom metal stuff at the time, was a band like Paradise Lost. I was listening to their first record "Lost Paradise" quite a bit, when it was first released.
