This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Sweet! They killed my bothers! Now I can ease back and watch the stressful annoyances fade away. ;)

More serious: looks fun. Will there be a pdf release, and is there another set of rules I'll need to play it?

It will be a PDF and you need SA! core rules. Shaolin Squirrels is a supplement...hmm, adventure...It adds squirrel powers and magic items, has setting characters and new player pregens but not the core rules. Hmm, you could get most of what you need from the Iridium Lite download here. More Squirrel Downloads here.

Some of the squirrel powers are only in SA! but the rest should be in the Iridium Lite file.

Thanks,
Bill

I think I'd like to pick up SA!, will you be at GenCon?

Will this book be there?

I'd love to see the design notes on this game...

Yes and I am running The Pie Incident, Shaolin Squirrels and Squirrels Ahoy (all of which filled about 8 hours after registration opened). If Sci-Fi is of interest to you, Clash, Klaxon, Zach and me will be getting together to run Nebuleon, SC2 and maybe a little Palladium. I am sure you would be welcome. I think we are shooting for Friday night.

That said, I suspect I will be able to convince these guys to play some squirrel silliness since it is designed to be quick adventures (pregens, adventure are about 4 hours at the most).

I am in final edit of it and it should be there. Since I print in house, I will only have myself to blame. ;)

I am always happy to chat about it. It all started with me schooling some freelancers on RPG.Net with an example of the drek publishers have to put up with in terms of proposals. My hypothtical was Radioactive Mutant post-apocalyptic Austrian Kangaroos, you know, because Kangaroos are native to Austria.

Beyond that, it is a scary journey. Mostly, it has to do with vast amounts of gourmet coffee, lots of chocolate and not sleeping (I am an insomniac) for about 4 days.

Thanks for the interest,
Bill

I once stayed awake for seven days straight in my early twenties on a bet. I could see writing SA! after that... Heck, I could see playing it with actual squirrels after that. The mind is a strange place...

I'd love to play SA!/SS with you, Bill. I don't know what Klax is doing, but he may be interested too.

I'll be prepared to run SC2, Cold Space, FTL Now, In Harm's Way, Aces, Blood Games II, and FTA! at any time during the con.

I was checking out the character sheet here and there are quite a few more numbers on it than I expected from a game about squirrels. How heavy are the rules in comparison to something like Unisystem (not that I'm a huge Unisystem fan, but it's the lightest ruled modern game I can think of that I've read).

I will be perfectly honest, the name Iridium Lite is really in comparison to Iridium Standard, the system behind Roma, Neb, Tales and Shades. So, no, I would not say this is super lite. However, I would state that many have pointed out it is lighter than D20. As the designer, I would put it lighter than d20 but not by much.

Now, the games all come with pregens so you do not have to make squirrels (although there are rules for that). So, jumping in is pretty quick. Key rules to remember:

Checks: Skills, powers and what have you are roll under on a d20.
Skills are Statistic + Rank of Skill + Aptitude = chance of success.
Powers/spells = Statistic + Rank of Power + Rank of related Skill

Quick Version of Combat:
1. Roll init = d10 + AGL
2. High init Rolls all attacks (Roll d20 +adjustments > Defense (STR+AGL of target) = hit)
3. Any hit, roll under weapon use/unarmed combat skill to target. Pick area if successful, roll d10 for random location if not.
4. Next init goes.

You can insert parries if you like. It is a skill check - DEX of attacker.

Karma : Use 3 to change a plot point. Jump and crevice and fall to your death? Spend 3 Karma and it did not happen. Cannot be used for things like "I kill the main Bad guy!". Spend 1 and you can reroll a failed skill check.

Fatigue: Measure how tired you become from casting powers. Spend three for an automatic activation. Spend 1 to activate most powers but I am straying from that in Shaolin Squirrels since I have to add some cinematic items.

That is Iridium Lite in a nutshell.
