This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What is THE most consistently fun D&D vein RPG, that isn't overly complex?

For every idiot who denounces Ayn Rand as "intellectualism" there is an excellent DM who creates a "Bioshock" adventure.

Palladium? C'mon people. I know you like it, but .............

People really like cocaine and heroin and Absinthe :p

And, yeah, I'm comparing your choice of tabletop RPG with a mind-bending drug addiction - only because the Palladium rules set has an interesting micro-game of finding the rules you need to play the fucking game.

Barbarians-of-Lemuria-Mythic-Edition is a skirt-length candidate: long enough to cover the important parts, short enough to be attractive to the eye.
TTRPGs are just games. Friends are forever.

Here's the thing. You're 100% right. Palladium's rules (beyond the very core) are byzantine (at best), but there is something bizarrely magical in the blend of those core rules and the settings that I can't exactly explain BUT HOT DAMN I have played so many Palladium sessions which far outclass the fun I've had with far "better" rules.

I don't think I have ever heard a better description of BoL.  That's outstanding.

Although I really dig Fate Core, I think that BRP remains my old 'go-to' system, and I love RuneQuest and Stormbringer for fantasy play.

Actually OpenQuest is probably one of the best versions of BRP, its pretty simple and straight forward, it really deserves more attention.

Mankcam

I still like BRP as a good old fashioned 'go-to' system, and I think OpenQuest is about the most straight forward one to play.

I use it for crazy homebrew fantasy in the flavour of Dungeon Crawl Classics (lightly less gonzo).

Mankcam

I often tend to return to some version of the BRP system whenever I want to have a classic fantasy game.
Two BRP lines, Stormbringer and RuneQuest were both great, and their fantasy settings totally rock as well.
So I'm pretty happy that that RuneQuest Glorantha is back in town (although it's not simple, it's quite a crunchy system at times).

However, for a BRP system that's a bit simplier and very straightforward I tend to use OpenQuest, it's far less fiddily than classic BRP systems. Quick character gen, one-page character sheet, and great game to play at the table. I tend to run it in a hack fantasy setting akin to something like a less gonzo Dungeon Crawl Classics.
Fits like an old glove for me :)

TSR D&D

I prefer original D&D or 1e AD&D, but I think B/X (esp. the '81 sets) is a fine choice for "just sit down and play it as written" TSR D&D.

Some flavor of BRP

Runequest 2, Stormbringer, et cetera.
