Title: Sea of Thieves RPG
Post by: Batjon on June 03, 2019, 02:01:59 AM
It has been annouced that Mongoose is doing a new Sea of Thieves RPG based on the video game of the same name for X-Box.

What do you all think of this? Has anyone looked at the PDF? I'd love to play something similar to the setting from Pirates of the Caribbean but do you all think that this game will be super kiddy-like and not much of an RPG or does it look like it might be fun?

Charging you 40 dollars for three hundred page pdf.  No thank you.  I rather get a physical copy for that price.

What i don't understand is that Sea of Thieves is a flop as a video game.

This is what happens when you focus on live services instead of good traditional making a product.  The publisher thought that people are going to be happy with half ass unpolished work because they can always update the game any time they want.  So they can do a shit job now, but fix it some where down the road much to the annoyance of the consumer.  Obviously the consumers didn't like it at all and didn't pay for the game.  Now your wondering why are these publishers heading for live services instead of making a good video game?  It sounds pleasing to investors who have stocks in the company and want massive growth to their investments.  No other reason than that.

Savage Worlds had a good Pirate RPG setting. I'd use that instead, especially if you have a bunch of Lego pirates.

Yeah Pirates of the Spanish Main is superb. You can do all the Pirate-themed gaming you could ever want. Hell I'd toss in material form the Beasts and Barbarians Pirates book just for kicks and giggles (and 50-Fathoms).

I see zero-need for a Sea of Thieves rpg. That's an intensely hard sell for me.

Sea of Thieves is pirate fantasy, though, and I believe Pirates of the Spanish Main is not.

I'd personally prefer to use Pirates & Dragons - either the Renaissance (https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/128665/Pirates--Dragons-Core-Rulebook) or the OneDice (https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/134525/OneDice-Pirates--Dragons) version - for this sort of thing, or go OSR and use Buccaneers & Bilge Rats (https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/139336/Buccaneers-and-Bilge-Rats). There's more than one decent pirate game available. Doesn't mean no one will "need" a Sea of Thieves one but it doesn't appeal to me personally.

Dudes they are asking for 40 dollars for their pdf.  That is a clear no from me.

How is Buccaneers & Bilge Rats?

Anything notable in the game than just using D&D with a pirate ship?

It's from Barrel Rider Games, James M. Spahn, so it's the usual quality stuff. It pretty much does what it sets out to do, add piraty stuff to your S&W/OSR game.

For a more extensive, historical approach, Freebooters (https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/207144/Freebooters) from Night Owl Workshop may be worth checking out.

Except that...this really isn't true.  The game got some mixed reviews, but there's been enough of a large player base that appears to be having a lot of fun with this.  Microsoft talked about 5 million players, and here's a sampling of articles about the game:

https://www.pcgamesn.com/sea-of-thieves/sea-of-thieves-sales-player-count
https://www.newsweek.com/sea-ofthieves-worth-it-twitch-microsoft-store-sale-summit1g-1303931
https://www.gamesradar.com/sea-of-thieves-found-its-niche-by-leaving-enough-space-for-the-imaginative-to-create-something-unique/
https://www.polygon.com/reviews/2019/5/9/18538173/sea-of-thieves-anniversary-update-review-xbox-pc

While the game is polarizing to some extent, the game is definitely not a failure and I doubt we'd see a Tabletop RPG if it was.

That's precisely why I mentioned 50-Fathoms and Beats and Barbarians. Fantasy + Pirates. Same system. Zero change. etc. etc.

It is still shit compared to a game with actual polish and care given to it.  Not to mention once there is no more profit to be made the publishers will just shut down the game and no one can play it any more.  At this point your just a pay pig waiting for the next scraps to be toss at you by publishers who don't care about making good games, but satisfying the greed of their investors.

Let's assume that the video game is good. Does that mean the players of that video game will buy a tabletop version? Does that mean that tabletop gamers that never heard of the video game will buy the tabletop RPG?

I don't think there is necessarily a correlation between success of a video game and success of its PNP RPG version.

A game example is Aden/Thunderscape. The original games were not great and probably played a role in the demise of SSI, one of the early pioneers of CRPGs. Yet the pen & paper version of the world is still going somehow.

Thunderscape D6 was a very good game. Sadly, I could never find extra copies for my gaming group.

And I agree there's no correlation between Videogame RPGs and Successful RPGs, as the graveyard of FLGS bargain bins will attest.

After reading the preview I am glad I skipped pre-ordering this.

I think I will stick with Pirates of the Spanish Main for Savage Worlds.
