This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Looks alright but doesn't leap out of the monitor and smack me in the chops like, say, Castle Falkenstein.

However thats probably more to do with age (mine) than the product.

Would someone kindly expound on the meaning of the word "vanfan"?

That's exactly what I was just going to ask.

Huh? Dudes, get with the programme! Vanfan is the too-cool-for-skool new buzzword that all the crazy knocked out kids are using. It means "vanilla fantasy" and you do NOT want to be talking about Robert Jordan, Terry Brookes or Tad Williams with this hip-new phrase on your lips. Make money! Amaze your friends! Impress women! All with the power of vanfan!

Welcome to the 21st century, readers! Word!

Litfan, of course, sounds like a generic anti-depressant. Although it frequently has the opposite effect.

Damn. I was hoping it was a whole new genre all about the adventures of White Van Man.

Bugger.

The last time I took litfan I spent eight hours thinking I was a series of informational pamphlets and a variety of junk mail.

NOT an experience to be reread - I mean repeated.

And here I was hoping vanfan was this new cutting-edge wave of cool that I could merge with in its infancy, making me part of something larger and awesome and getting me into the oval office at last.

Quote from: BalbinusI think everyone is agreed that the name is awful, my OP said the same thing.

I am a touch concerned that apparently there are over a 100 new edges, powers etc. in the book.  Kind of the point of SW is that it is laughably easy to run for the GM, adding in extra stuff may make it less so.

This is what I call my Shit Test: whenever I look to a new game, if the back cover is only a container for slogans like: '100 new races!' '165327354 new spells!' '273543 whatevers!' the game will probably be a steaming turd.
My name is Ramón Nogueras. Running now Vampire: the Masquerade (Giovanni Chronicles IV for just 3 players), and itching to resume my Call of Cthulhu campaign (The Sense of the Sleight-of-Hand Man).

Righto, I really need to give Perdido Street Station another try. Titus Groany I'm all for esp. if anyone could incorporate Titus Alone into the mix. Harrisonesque?

I thought vanfan was short for Vanity Fantasy (as in vanity press). :o Too much looking at POD lately I guess.

I do like the 2nd piece of art. The rest kinda m3hs it into bad pulp. I don't like a bunch of extra rules (for "flexibility" or not) regardless of rules, something like Savage Worlds in particular.

Currently I'm on a post-human/cyberpunk trip right now with the huge arcology of The Night Land and Tsutomu Nihei's dystopian megastructure* action-fest BLAME! & related works. Despite both being flawed works, the artwork and sheer creativity are very inspiring. This Runepark preview isn't near as inspiring.

Hello All,

I'm Sean Preston, the creator of RunePunk, here.  I don't know what you've seen regarding RunePunk, but I hope to provide a bit of illumination for you. First of, here's the Intro page that may provide you with a bit more insight. Additionally, RunePunk resources are listed along the side. Though sparse at the moment, I'm putting together some One Sheets, Pre-Gens, and a Primer for people interesting in taking RunePunk for a test spin.  Additionally, runepunk.com will take you directly there.

If you're interested in play reports...

I'd invite you to check out here and a number of ScatterPoint Sentinels (nicely presented play reports) and pre-generated characters here.

Clint Black (of Necessary Evil fame) worked with me to achieve the proper balance of the rules.  I didn't add rules for rules sake and I didn't once mention the number of new edges (or what have you) on the back. (Although, admittedly, I alluded to them.)  I cleaved as closely possible to the core rules and only expanded where necessary to capture the flavour of the setting. Nor did I rip whole cloth from any particular work.  What I listed were inspirations as literary points of reference so people could get a sense of where I was coming from.

I promise you, love it, like it, or hate it, this is not D&D. Of that, I am certain.

I appreciate your frankness and candor and will answer any questions you may have as best as I am able. If you'd like more general information regarding RunePunk, I'll be happy to provide that as well. :)

Regards,

Sean Preston
