This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The D&D Documentary / The Great Kingdom -- WTF is going on?

There's been a little news about it here.

I just posted on KS asking for some kind of confirmation, since the most troubling thing is the silence on this issue.  I think they definitely need to address this to the backers.

There was a recent update addressing the issues.

It's a little vague, I suspect lawyers are involved.  Hope this will be able to be released.

The people behind The Great Kingdom has been ordered by court not to advertise their movie or speak about it in public.
Thats why the Kickstarter, website (thegreatkingdom.com) and facebook page is closed.

The case is set for october, and nothing will probably happen before.

You can find all the material and documents from the court case here: https://iapps.courts.state.ny.us/nyscef/DocumentList?docketId=yrhRL9H9/SZtgTonUcRyZg==&display=all

They reading the last document, #41. It sums it up quite well.

Yeah, I pretty much found out about that.  I mentioned it in the other thread but bumping it just brought back a tangential argument.

Interestingly enough, one of the biggest problems that came up in the court case was the big push conducted to get the Kickstarter over the finish line.  There was a thread on Tenkar's Tavern which I participated in that ended up being used as Exhibit B.

This argument came up in the plantiff's follow-up--see here.

QuoteAnother of the supporters to which defendants are grateful is Benoist Poire.  See Ex. A. Hereto.  Through his support for defendants' competing film, he apparently has been given the impression by defendants' that "the Great Kingdom grew out of" the D&D Production.  The Benoist comment can be seen at Exhibit B p. 2.  Ernie Gygax, another supporter of the competing film and a relative founder of D&D, also acknowledges there that defendants have "spent a couple of years and plenty of air miles" on the competing project.  Id.  By defendants own admission they had only started working on the competing project in or about August, 2013, almost one year ago -- by no means "a couple of years".  Ernie Gygax, who had been interviewed for the D&D production in 2012 simply acknowledges that defendant's competing film is a product of the original partnership's hard work and expenditures.

Benoist and Ernie Gygax were really pushing social media to get this project funded--I think they really helped convincing those on the ledge to back the project.  But the big irony is their very defense and promotion of that project may have helped the other guys win the injunction, which may ultimately sink the project.  My concerns about the law suit ultimately proved correct.

I just feel for the backers (I ended up backing it once it passed its goals, since if the film gets made I'd buy a copy anyway).  I knew the risks going in, but I really hope all the other backers were all aware of the risks.

I suspect one of two things will happen--either the Kickstarter money is going into voluntary or court ordered Escrow which means nobody can touch it until this is resolved, or since the court order doesn't prohibit that, they may go into the post-production process--but if they spend the money on that, what happens if the plaintiffs win?

I wonder if the responsible thing to do would have been to cancel the Kickstarter immediately after the lawsuit was filed.  It looks like (can't really tell since it's not in a doc) that they were able to convince the judge to delay the injunction ruling to a date after the Kickstarter was completed.

I hope when the judge makes her decisions she gives some consideration to the backers involved, since with the KS page down it's gonna back it difficult to communicate with the backers.  At the very least I hope they are allowed to give a statement indicating how the funds are being handled while this action is going on.

Necroing the thread since this makes sense.

Over 5.5 years since the first one was backed, and about 4 years since the second one was backed, and after 4 years of a legal battle, the lawsuit has been dismissed with prejudice.

So I guess we have to see "now what".  I have not been pleased with the DnD Doc folks since they have not posted a Kickstarter Update since Jan 2016, and other backers have been annoyed.  (You can say they probably had to keep things mum but even a simple update on the lawsuit would have been the kind thing to do).

The Great Kingdom's injunction has lifted so once the legal word is confirmed and their Kickstarter and web sites can go back up we may see what happens on their end.

But now what?  With all the money spent on lawyers and in this battle both parties could be financially exhausted.  I also feel that they lost the real exciting momentum all the backers and (at the time) the industry had for this thing.  Will we see a movie?  Two movies?  Will these be on Netflix and distributed widely or forced to buy DVDs at GaryCon or some other small circuit convention?  Do they still have enough money or will a second KS be needed to finish.

This one certainly didn't have a lot of public-facing drama, but I feel it was one of the better KS that got squandered.
