This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Ghost Whistler

Quote from: The Butcher;562657I find the notion that people are "out to destroy the hobby" risible.
No it's true; he has evidence...
"Ghost Whistler" is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). Parental death, alien battles and annihilated worlds.

Quote from: Ladybird;562686No, the problem isn't that rpg.net is full of liberals. The problem is that it's full of shitheads who won't fucking shut up and won't take anything less than complete, unquestioning acceptance of their cause; who will pick on minor, insignificant details and claim those prove that you're a terrible person; who will accuse you of vile things, and then accuse you of derailing when you ask what they're talking about; whose first presumption in an argument is "you are a terrible person and guilty of everything you have been accused of, because nobody ever users accusations of -isms to further their own personal grudges"; who intentionally drive away people who agree with them.

They don't want to discuss, because they're already right, as far as they think. They want to order and control, not educate and improve.

I'm going to mull this over because it is pretty insightful to the faults of tBP.
"Meh."

Quote from: Azure Lord;562483Ettin--you know, the same poster who sparked the Desborough flamewar--has made a thread about how Golarion is totally racist.  I guess he hopes the social justice sycophants will take umbrage to Paizo's existence.

Oh, please, link me.  This shit I can't wait to see!

It is insightful, but it misses a key point: every one of those things is present in virtually every progressive community on the Internet.  The worst that happens in conservative circles is that you get called a socialist or WHY DO YOU HATE FREEDOM.

The Butcher

Quote from: Azure Lord;562663I suppose I spoke in haste--there are people with an interest in fundamentally transforming the hobby.

They're welcome to try. In fact, I'd say they had their chance, and failed (if their aim was, as Pundit and others claim, to displace traditional RPGs entirely) or succeeded (if their aim was to explore games similar to pre-existing RPGs in structure, but built on very distinct design goals borne out of uncle Ron's theories). I won't object unless the change is actually harmful to the hobby's popular image (which frankly isn't exactly great to begin with).

I have no love for crap like Poison'd or Hell For Leather, or for people who start RPGnet threads like "ZOMG Pathfinder's Golarion setting is racist because Asians" and like I said, I support the use of weaponised mockery against these people, the same way I support mocking the militant leftists and hipsters of RPGnet, or catpissmen, or racists, or homophobes, or hate-mongering one-true-wayists; douches come in all shapes and sizes and colors and denominations and polical agendas, and they're all welcome to get the fuck off my lawn.

I wouldn't be caught dead playing a misery-tourism storygame like Grey Ranks or Montségur 1244, but that's a matter of personal taste rather than any sort of objective divergence in principles. Same goes for the really out there, scripted or quasi-scripted storygames like Polaris or A Flower For Mara. I afford the people who write these games the same sort of respect I'd afford your average game designer (mostly, I just don't presume they're all perverts out to destroy the games I love).

The rest I haven't tried, but I probably would, given opportunity. I wouldn't mind at all giving Fiasco, or Apocalypse World, or Chronica Feudalis, or The Mist-Robed Gate a whirl.

tl;dr -- I don't see what the fuss is all about. It's all Internet forum drama and attention-whoring to me. But I support merciless mocking of idiots across ideological lines as a mild form of social hygiene.

It is a cunt convention, no 'like' about it.

I'm gonna go drink and game some to remind myself that tBP does not fully represent the hobby.

thedungeondelver

that's a posting from Ettin, who is basically a shitlord troll from SA's forums.  That thread should have been thrown off a cliff at birth, but the fact that it continued on and is still open is the flat fucking proof that the crazies murdered the staff and run the asylum over at big throbbing purple.

That's awesome. Then have his lair, something truly awful, a stagnant, stinking, horrible cesspool of a place, act as a Gate to the great whirlpool of all the waste of the Abyss that is Arpegheneth's Ring, throbbing with all the faces of impotent know-it-alls and lesson givers of everywhere and nowhere sliding and swirling for eternity towards the unavoidable oblivion lying beyond the planes.

And this one is a present:

I don't get it.

These people used to be fond of complaining that non-whites don't get portrayed in RPG material.

Along comes Paizo and portrays non-white human characters in cultural milieus that seems at least superficially derivative of some African and Asian cultures (in the same vein that, say, the Forgotten Realms or Greyhawk are derivative of Medieval Europe); and people have the gall to be offended.

I'm willing to bet that, if you portrayed an Asian or African-looking character as a knight in full plate, they'd also be crying bloody murder about cultural imperialism or making a mockery of non-Western cultures by dressing non-whites in a typically European outfit, or somesuch.
