This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

His distinctive pieces in the Fiend Folio are the ones I remember best. I believe he did some stuff for FASA as well? I can't find anything with a quick google search.
*edit* no, I'm getting his stuff confused with Laubensiten. Still...

The notion of an exclusionary and hostile RPG community is a fever dream of zealots who view all social dynamics through a narrow keyhole of structural oppression.

He was the best, IMO.

His art in the FF books was a huge influence. The Citadel of Chaos was my gateway into RPGs. This darker/British/satirical shade of fantasy still influences my games and writings. But also D&D (Fiend Folio, etc.), Warhammer, and OSR games.

He managed to combine fantasy, detail, grittiness, weirdness, and action into his work. This guy was a legend, the the epitome of "old school dark fantasy".

Fighting Fantasy was my introduction to everything rpg and and fantasy, so Russ Nicholsons art in books like Warlock of Firetop Mountain and the already mentioned Citadel of Chaos were really formative for my approach to roleplaying - nobody did gnarly goblins and orcs like Russ.

And it is cool to see, how many systems og setting he covered. From FF to Warhammer to AD&D... and several cool full-page works in Lamentations of the Flame Princess.

He also, from my short interactions with him on Twitter, seemed like a really nice guy.
