This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Whatever happened to BESM3?

Quote from: SilverlionOpen Versatile Anime--similar to BESM 1E with different base mechanics (still D6 based but uses a "roll pool, take highest compare to target number assaigned by GM" mechanic)

Put out by Wise Turtle Publishing: http://www.wiseturtle.com/products.html (I own a print copy its short--spends a lot of space on sample NPC's but is solid mechanically at least so much as 1E BESM :) )

It looks decent.  Thanks!

Quote from: Ian AbsentiaIn all seriousness, that was actually a problem that I had with Tri-Stat dX -- it was re-inventing the wheel that GURPS and Hero already represented.  And it didn't do it any better.  I'm with Wil (at least I think this is what Wil was suggesting) -- GURPS is too mechanically fiddly for my tastes, and the pleasing feature of 1st edition BESM was that it was intentionally simple.  2nd edition and Tri-Stat dX tried to do too much with too little.  Like I said above, turgid.

!i!
My first exposure to the BESM/Tri-Stat system actually ound up being the Sailor Moon game.  I'd bought it sort of on a lark, as I'd been bored and watchign a lot of afternoon Cartoon Network at the time.

I fell in love with the system, and the book overall was well done.

But I could never bring myself to buy the BESM 1st corebook because, frankly, it was too little for too much money.  They wanted too much for something that had all the content and presentation of a freebie homebrew.

So I was really excited to get BESM 2nd.  Until I got it, started reading it, and realized it was a horridly slapped together mess.  They'd just taken the same basic core, slapped some extra shit on it, and dumped in tons of powers and skills without even tihnking about them.  No attempt at even the illusion of balance at all, the point system ultimately felt meaningless because 1 point could buy you such drastically different things at such drastically different power levels.  The progression of skill and power levels wasn't even consistent.

Which is a damn shame, because at it's core, they had a great system once upon a time, but then the arsed it all up.
