This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Baptism of Fire - Skomroszny Social Class

Skomroszny characters in Baptism of Fire are considered outcasts. How have you played this out during character generation and during zero level?

Did you still pay attention to the social class originally rolled? If so, let's say he's originally szlachcic - do you let him use his noble family name? That's got some story potential, right? How about starting money and background skill - based on original social class or outcast social class?

Or, do you just make the skomroszny outcast and have at it with one name and anything else that comes with being an outcast?

Thanks,
Matt

So in Baptism of Fire, if you decide to play a skomroszny character, you can roll your social class to see what level of society you came from, but you are automatically made an "outcast", which is to say that you do not have a normal social status in mainstream Slavic society.

In 101 Sarmatians there are a couple of nobles who became Skomroszny; in their case they are pretty famous so some people know they were from a noble house originally, but the fact that they have become Skomroszny is a great source of embarrassment to their clans.

So yes, if you have a noble character who chooses the life of a Skomroszny you still ought to determine which house he belonged to; in particular because if he was in places where members of that house have lands or settled they would not be pleased by his presence!

Characters that start as Outcasts only get the outcast background skill. But if a player starts as any other class and chooses to become a Skomroszny he would have both his original background skill plus the outcast background skill choice (UNLESS the character became an outcast at an extremely young age, ie early childhood).

Thanks for the feedback - there's real story potential with the noble turned skomroszny situation. Hope it happens to one in my group!

I had forgotten about the new book, so thanks for the reminder. I'll post thoughts in a few weeks after I've had a chance to review a hardcopy.
