This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I find the "Unisystem", the rules Buffy uses, very hard to remember, what with the way successes work.

I think it can be cleaned up easily though as follows:  set a target number, player rolls d10+mods (attribute + skill), if they get equal to or higher than the target number they succeed.

Task Difficulty  Roll to Succeed
Easy                 2+
Moderate           4+
Hard                 6+
Very Hard          8+
Nearly Impossible 10

Quote from: Scuzz;292793Just want to thank everyone for their advice. I should add, I dont hate buffy, I just like my vampires a tad more evil than what is portrayed in the buffy show. Sometimes the cheese is too much but I have seen most all episodes (the wife calls it her 'comfort' show).

I have some dice coming a bunhc of everything from d3-d20 and duplicates of d10, d20 etc. The book didnt say if I needed more than one to make things easier but I went with 4 d10's anyway.

I've tasked myself with getting a story down as well as understanding the character creation over the weekend, hopefully if all goes well I'll have her create a character too but that might be a bit hasty.

I'm looking forward to it now more than I was the otherday! Less trepidation I guess.

thanks people!

Good luck mate. Tell us how it goes.

Hello! Here are my bits of advice:

Sit down for a night with the expectation that all you'll be doing ins creating a character, not playing. That'll take some of the pressure off you and allow you to think about some possible plot lines.

That said, you'll probably find yourself playing the first night away. It just tends to happen...

When you sit down to create characters, talk about the character your wife is making, talk about the town, and the other characters in the town. I would ask your wife to help make up some of the details and secondary characters, especially since it'll be just you and her.

I think if you do those two things, play will come pretty naturally to you.

Sounds good - the Buffy RPG is great on background, tone and characterisation IMO, and can be played pretty dark (the episodes varied a lot - in general the first two seasons were actually darker, I think).  I think the Unisystem rules are too clunky as written, especially for new gamers, but plenty of people disagree.

In any case, don't feel bound by the rules.  RPGs aren't really about rules.  Plenty of people play RPGs rulesless or virtually rulesless just fine.
