This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: James J SkachThere were these booklets - some of you have mentioned them before - where you were a character, say a knight in armor, or a barabarian with two swords; and the whole things was based on what attack you chose and what defense the person with the other book chose.  I'll dig up the name, but I know you guys know what I'm talking about.  C'mon..I'm at work..somebody throw me a lifeline...

Damn it...I know this one...Warlord something....and the Black Baron ?

I worked on a system once that was based on "pick a number".  Basically, the player and the GM would each pick a number between 1 and X, with X being the difficulty of the task.  If the difference between the numbers was equal or less than the player's skill, he succeeded.

I eventually wound up abandoning it, because I was having troubles how to implement certain aspects of the GMs side of things, like hidden rolls and rolling for NPCs in combat.  I had at one point come up with a solution, which I then promptly forgot once it hit paper as I tend to do, and then the paper got basically destroyed when some jackhole randomly dismantled my lab computer.

Steffan O'sullivan's game Sherpa used the 1.100th of a second digit on a stopwatch as a d10.

The MET LARP system used a wierd combination of keyword trait bidding, and rock-paper-scissors, the exact details of which I forget.  In actual play most of our players never even knew the rules so they were largely ignored, often in favor of just flat RPS tests, with number of traits serving as a tie.  I remember being rather surprised and shocked when I finally got around to reading the rules because they were completely different.

Quote from: SosthenesFinally I'd like to add that I generally dislike the "how much is it worth to you" method of dice-less playing, i.e. you have a fixed resource pool and have to decide how many points you wager for a certain outcome. Meh.
For me, that's not a problem as long as we are talking about using a resource which exists in the setting and which the characters themselves are aware of, no matter whether it is called chi or stamina or wealth: then it simply makes sense. On the other hand, an OOC mechanic for directing events purely from an outside perspective ("How many plot points is the player willing to spend in order to push the game into a certain direction?") wouldn't be to my taste, either.

Yeah Lost Worlds. That company first started that book vs. book style of play with a World War I  air combat game called "Ace of Aces".

I've always been curious to know what it would take to put that all in a database and so allow a computer to facilitate that kind of combat widespread...

It would be like this huge scripted combat database that had for huge numbers of possible combinations, like for man with sword against three gnolls with spears as well as women with short sword and dagger against thief with dagger and club...or something...

Actually it sounds pretty fun, but I wouldn't do it with grown up men.

Anyway, as a followup to re: "dirtied-up rock scissors paper", if you can get a hand on them or the rules, here are some other games that illustrate the method:

Magic Realm (you can definitely get the fan-compiled 3rd ed. rulebook free on the net; whether it would make any sense without the components is another question)

Warp War

Also, along the lines of "Lost Worlds", there was/is an aerial combat game called Ace of Aces.

One thing to watch out about a lot of these map-less systems is that they often don't work very well for more than one combatant per side. MR and Warp War do (at least procedurally, you may or may not find them to be plausible representations of their subjects). Burning Wheel is pretty hard to puzzle out for multiperson skirmishes and, pending some actual play, I'm still not convinced it works without handwaving. You may have a better sense of this one way or the other with the BE rules.

There is a card game version of "Rock, Paper, Scissors" . We had it in the store about a year or 2 ago. I'm trying to remember the manufacturer.  If I remember right, you just shuffle the cards into two decks and there are symbols and pictures on them. It plays just like traditional RPS as to what beats what.

I'm just wondering what RPG Pseudoephedrine played which did just involve comparing dick size. I serious suggest that he contacts the authorities if the chap that taught him it is still leading the youth group.

Session Lager features Rock, Paper, and Scissors on the underside of every bottle cap.  You and a friend each crack a bottle open at the same time, then compare caps.  Or, if you're playing solo, you call out your choice before cracking the bottle.  I've already used the bottle caps in a very quick-n-dirty game.

I'm pretty sure FATAL Live would be illegal in most civilized countries.

What with the kiddie porn angle and all.
